Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20
Authors’ Note It may surprise you to learn that students do not learn the reach for a new key after typing the few lines of practice that introduce the new key. Instead, the primary concept is “once over lightly;” that is, the lesson “introduces” the new key, but the student actually develops locational security over the next several lessons. Therefore, most students will not need any new-key practice other than that contained in Lessons 1-20. However, for those instructors and students who do de - sire additional practice, we provide supplementary drills for Lessons 1-10 and a process for using MAP to provide additional drills in Lessons 10-20.
Supplementary Drills for Lessons 1-10 Pages 8-19 of this document provide additional drill material for each of the new-key lessons. For example, students desiring more practice on the keys introduced in Lesson 2 can type the lines in the Lesson 2 drills on page 9; only the reaches learned up to that point are built into the practice material. Here is one way of typing these drills while still in the GDP software. (Lesson 2 is used as the example here.)
After you have completed the lesson (as indicat- ed by the filled-in boxes to the left of each lesson part), click Timed Writings in the toolbar.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing, 10e. 1 Click the Subjects box list arrow, scroll down, and click Open Timed Writings from the drop- down menu.
Note: You will not actually be taking a timed writing. You are merely using this screen to type your supplementary untimed drill lines.
Double-click Open Timed Writings.
Click Next to skip the instruction screen; then click OK to accept the default No Time option.
Note: To take the 1' timed writing at the end of each review lesson, click 1 Minute instead.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing. 2 Begin typing the drill lines. (Ignore the beep, which is used only when taking timed writings.) When you are finished, click Done.
Click OK in the GDP Message screen.
Regardless of whether you made errors, type 0 in the box provided; then click Next. Doing so will automatically save your work in your Portfolio under the heading “Open Timed Writings.”
Note: If you actually took a 1' timed writing, type the number of actual errors you made.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing. 3 Finally, click Lessons on the toolbar to return to the Lessons menu.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing. 4 Using MAP in Lessons 10-20 If you want MAP to diagnose and then remediate keystroking problems, you will need to wait until Lesson 20—after all the keys have been learned. However, you can use MAP in Lessons 10-19 for inten- sive practice on any of the alphabetic or nonprinting keys (TAB, ENTER, RIGHT and LEFT SHIFT, and SPACE BAR) by following these steps:
From the Lesson menu, click MAP.
If this is the first time you have used the MAP routine, read this introductory screen. If you pre- fer, you can click Skip this screen in the future. Then click Next.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing. 5 A pretest passage will appear. Because this pas- sage contains reaches you have not yet learned, do not type this passage. Instead, press any key and then click Score Text.
The first screen of the MAP analysis appears. Ig- nore any errors identified. Until you complete Lesson 19, you will use MAP to provide extra practice—not to diagnose and remediate keystroking errors. After all, it is natural to make errors as you are first learning a new key and you should not be overly concerned about them.
Click MAP Summary.
The only part of this screen that you will use in Lessons 10-19 is the 26 alphabetic characters and the TAB, SHIFT, ENTER, and SPACE BAR keys shown on the keyboard.
Click any one of these keys for extensive, al- ways-new practice on that key. In this illustra- tion, the Y key is selected.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing. 6 In this example, three rows of words practicing the Y reach are shown. Type each line once, cor- recting errors as you type.
After typing the drill lines, click Previous. (If an- other set of drills appears, click Previous again.)
When the MAP Prescription Incomplete screen appears, click MAP Summary.
Enrichment Activities for Lessons 1-20 of Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing. 7 You may now click the Y key again for entirely new drills, click another key for intensive prac- tice, or click Lessons on the toolbar to return to the Lessons menu.
The next time you select MAP from the home page, the same MAP Summary screen will ap- pear, and you can immediately select the keys on which you want extensive new practice.
