UKS2: Topic: The Maya Block C: Writing

This amazing civilisation created writing using logograms and hieroglyphs. Find out how the writing was used and write and draw words including your own name. Discover the Copan stairway and its hieroglyphs and marvel at the four main Maya codices. Finally design, paint and make a class or school Maya codex on ‘tree bark’.

Session 1 History and Art Children will: Hieroglyphs and logograms  Look at examples of Maya writing and at logograms, asking: What can Learn about the Maya they tell us about Maya culture? writing system of logograms  Understand syllable glyphs of the Maya people and write/draw words using the glyphs and hieroglyphs; write and draw words including your own name using the glyphs. Session 2 History and Art Children will: Hieroglyph stairways and  Gain insight into the Copan stairway and look at the hieroglyphs emblems contained on it Discover the Copan stairway  Discuss the significance of the Copan stairway and the meaning of dynasty and its hieroglyphs; make a  Make a class hieroglyph stairway and design a class or school emblem class hieroglyph stairway and glyph design a class or school emblem glyph. Session 1 Provided: Presentations covering: Maya Games; The history and main points of Maya writing; Maya syllable charts. You will need: Access to the Internet; Plain paper, black markers, scissors, glue.

Session 2 Provided: Presentations covering: The Copan Stairway & Maya emblem glyphs. You will need: Access to the Internet; Maya syllable charts from Session 1; Boxes of a similar size to fit together in a stairway, brown sugar paper and sticky tape, paper and black, marker pens.

Session 3 Provided: Presentation covering: Maya codices & How to make a Maya codex. You will need: Access to the Internet; Figs (ready to eat, dried or fresh), paper, tea bags, small decorating rollers, scissors, PVA glue and brown paint, masking tape.
