ANIMAL FARM NEWS Due: ______

Assignment: As a small group you will publish a newspaper for our bulletin board. The animals on Animal Farm publish this newspaper. This can be a print newspaper or a power-point newspaper.

Remember what the animals' point-of-view would be. They will not tell the stories from the point-of-view of humans! They will tell the news using propaganda, the way they want the animals to hear it and serving their own purposes. Each student will write one story/article as though you were one of the animals on the farm. Each person within your group should write a different kind of story or design piece based on the list below. You are not limited to the novel’s plot. Instead, create a story outside what we read.

News Stories

1. Editorial: Editor's opinion

2. World news story: interesting to people all over the world...a major story of importance!

3. National news story: interests mostly people in the country of England

4. Local news story: Interests only the people locally (close to Animal Farm such as from Pinchfield or Foxwood)

5. Sports story (Be creative! Pigs vs. the Goats in basketball for example)

6. Business story: a story about a new store opening in the town of Willingdon, or maybe Animal Farm sells a huge number of eggs to the humans last week for example.

7. Movie Review: Compare the book to the movie or a review of any movie (starring animals)

8. Travel Piece: description of a particular travel destination

9. Advice Column

10. Obituary

Design Pieces

11. Three classified ads: These are small ads in the classified section of the paper. The animals are buying and selling or looking for something from private people outside of Animal Farm...For Sale: or For Rent...or Wanted...

12. One commercial advertisement: This is larger than a classified ad. This needs to be an ad like you would see in a newspaper. It must be two or three or more inches square (or rectangular). A picture must go with this.

13. Cartoon: computer or by hand Specific Requirements for Stories

1. Each story must have a headline.

2. Each story must tell the five W's.....Who, What, When, Where, Why?

3. Each story must be typed using an appropriate font for others to read.

4. A picture to go along with your story. Pictures can be drawn or computer generated.

5. Each story must be at least one page in length.

Specific Requirements for Design Pieces

1. Design pieces must have a prominent headline or title.

2. Design pieces must be detailed in words and images.

3. Design pieces must be original drawings.

4. Pieces must be big and eye-catching enough for the consumer to notice.

Each individual assignment is worth up to 25 points for the writer. You will also receive a group grade out of 10 points. Rubric is on the bottom of this paper. Each story will be graded on language use, presentation/creativity, and mechanics. No spelling errors, please. Each group will be graded on variety of stories, presentational layout, and overriding theme.
