Structures Topic, Assessment on the Development of Cell Theory

Integrated Science 1. Structures Topic, Assessment on the development of Cell Theory

In this assessment you are to research on the internet the following Scientists: 1. Hans and Zacharias Janssen 2. Robert Hooke 3. Anton Leeuwenhoek 4. Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann - Rudolf Virchow 5. August Weismann

In the wrong order the above scientists are credited with:- - Discoverer of microorganisms - Microscope makers - Looks at lots of plants and decides that all plants are made up of cells. - First to see a cell - applies the cell theory to evolutionary theory and Genetics. - sees yeast dividing and decides that all cells come from pre-existing cells.

Your task is to make a PowerPoint that has a picture of the scientist, the relevant dates and a picture of what they make, find out or see. Use the information gained to create a timeline of the development of the cell theory as the last page on the PowerPoint!

Questions you might try to answer in your PowerPoint are:

1. What theory did these scientists provide evidence for?

2. What instrument was necessary before the cell theory could be developed?

3. Which three scientists directly contributed evidence for the cell theory?

4. How did the earlier scientists and their contributions directly affect the discoveries of later scientists (see #2)? For example, what had to come first?

5. List the three parts of the cell theory. Useful Web sites
