St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church 545 South East Avenue (708) 386-5613 Oak Park IL 60304 [email protected] www.stchristophersoakpark.org The Right Reverend Jeffrey D. Lee, Bishop of Chicago The Very Rev. Paris Coffey, Rector, Dean of the Oak Park Deanery Dr. L. Richard Sobak, the Organist and Choirmaster Mr. Alex Nied, Director of Children’s Music Ms. Barbara Kohnhorst, Director of Children/Youth Formation Ms. Josie Mazzaia, Office Manager The People of St. Christopher’s, the Ministers WELCOME In the name of Jesus Christ, welcome to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, an open and affirming congregation in the worldwide Anglican Communion.

You are welcome here . . .  if you are married or single, for we will partner with you;  if you are a parent or a child of one, for we are all family together;  if you know what you believe or have no idea what you believe, for we are one in our longing for deeper knowledge of God;  if you are from this place or a stranger from far away, for we were all once strangers ourselves;  if you are straight or gay, black or white, rich or poor . . .

No matter who you are, we welcome you, praying that you will find here what you seek. In fact, we pray that you will find here the love that is Christ’s law – love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things – knowing that God’s love is bigger than anything we can ask or imagine. All people – adults and children – who are seeking a deeper relationship with Christ are welcome to receive Communion.

2 Moreover, we invite you to share freely with us in all aspects of worship. Everything you need for today’s service is included in this booklet, with the exception of hymns. Hymns are listed in this leaflet and above the pulpit and can be found in the blue Hymnal 1982.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

The people stand, if able, to sing the following from The Hymnal 1982

Opening Hymn #440 “Blessed Jesus, at thy word” Liebster Jesu

Opening Acclamation

Presider Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

Song of Praise Words and Music: Don Sasser

4 Hymn #246, Lift Every Voice and Sing, used with permission of Church Publishing

Collect for the Sixth Sunday of Pentecost

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. All O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 2:1-5 The Lord said to me: O mortal, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you. And when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. He said to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, "Thus says the Lord GOD." Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 123 1 To you I lift up my eyes, * to you enthroned in the heavens. 2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, * and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, 3 So our eyes look to you, God, * until we are shown your mercy. 4 Have mercy upon us, God, have mercy, * for we have had more than enough of contempt, 5 Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich, * and of the derision of the proud.

5 All stand, as able, for the following, found in The Hymnal 1982, turning to face the Gospel Book for the reading of the Gospel.

Sequence Hymn #628 “Help us, O Lord, to learn” St. Ethelwald

Gospel Reading: Mark 6:1-13 Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house." And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. Reader The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
