POSITION: 2 Law Enforcement Instructors

LOCATION: Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa
SHIFT: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
WORK UNIT: Iowa Law Enforcement Academy
STATUS: Permanent Full-time
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director Michael D. Quinn
DESCRIPTION:
Plans, assigns, checks work, gives instruction and maintains discipline in basic academy, specialty schools, and continuing education programs assigned. Counsels and provides guidance to officers in the area of the instructor’s proficiency. Prepares, administers, and grades examinations. Uses educational media equipment for instructional purposes. The instructor provides planning, preparing, evaluating and updating training materials and course outlines. Writes articles for law enforcement publications. Corresponds with graduates in response to questions or problems in the field of the instructor’s experience.
Other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
The individual must have knowledge of the principles, methods, tools, and techniques of progressive law enforcement training and instructional methods. Knowledge of current law enforcement programs, literature, curricula, printed and visual material available. Ability to persuade, challenge, and motivate classroom students. Ability to research, plan and make use of law enforcement training materials. Knowledge of and ability to work with current computer programs. Displays high standards of ethical conduct. Works and communicates with internal and external clients and customers to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner. Displays a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently. Works with minimal supervision. Encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust and group identity. Fosters commitment and team spirit. Iowa firearms instructor certification or experience in dealing with domestic violence and violence against women issues are desired. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in criminology, police administration, police science or a closely related field, or the social or behavioral sciences and five years of progressively responsible peace officer experience in a law enforcement agency or program with at least one year of management experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of graduate level course work in law, criminology, police administration, police science or a closely related field, for each year of the qualifying experience to a maximum of three years.
OR
Substituting six months of full-time employment as a training instructor in a recognized law enforcement training or educational program for each year of the qualifying experience.
ILEA instructor certification in defensive tactics, chemical munitions, ASP, Taser and driving is requested.
