Manchester Elementary School Where Learning Never Ends

Martin Tierney, Principal Katie Purper, Assistant Principal Yellow Jacket News November, 2015 Our “Happy Bee” logo is used with permission from DJ Inkers, www.djinkers.com. We are happy to welcome our new school nurse, Mrs. Annie Gilotte. Mrs. Gilotte comes to Manchester with experience in Carroll County Public Schools. She has been the nurse at Charles Carroll Elementary. Mrs. Gilotte’s first day will be Monday, November 2nd. Last month a very successful Bingo was held to raise money for our new playgrounds. Over $5,000.00 was raised. A great deal of hard work went into making this event such a success. A huge thank you goes out to Mindy Lankford, Gina Shaneybrook, Laura Tawes, Maria Staiger and Cindy Ringley for planning and organizing this event. A second thank you goes to the entire group of volunteers who helped out that evening. We could not have done it without them. Many former Manchester Elementary students did an awesome job. The support from our families and the community since we started fund raising for the playgrounds has just been unbelievable. We are happy to announce that through all of this support and hard work we are approaching our goal. With the upcoming Unwind Candle Promotion, Sign Campaign and potential generous contribution from Sheetz, it looks like we will be able to acquire the funds necessary to construct our play areas. Mrs. Grace Giermek, chairperson of the Playground Committee, deserves accolades for her dedication and hard work on this project. Our students will be reaping the rewards of her efforts. We will keep everyone posted on this exciting news. May all the families of our Manchester School Community enjoy this Thanksgiving season with family and friends. We have so much to be thankful for in our school community. As always, thank you for your support of our school and for modeling the importance of education for our students. To all families traveling this Thanksgiving, be safe. Veteran’s Day November 11th, is a day set aside for us to pause and honor the many men and woman who have served our country. Many families in our school community have firsthand knowledge of the sacrifices these heroes make for all of us. Please remember to say thank you to all our former and current man and women who serve in our armed forces. Students will be participating in various activities on November 11th related to Veteran’s Day.

American Education Week American Education Week is being celebrated the week of November 16th to the 20th. Parents, guardians and family members are welcome to visit classrooms on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday of the week. During American Education week, classrooms may be visited between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Preschool age siblings should not be visiting classes during American Education Week. Teachers try very hard to provide a normal routine and structure during the week. Young children can cause undue disruptions to instruction. Parking is limited at Manchester. Visitors may park on the parking lot of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Early Dismissal Days Friday, November 6th and Wednesday, November 25th are scheduled Early Dismissal Days. Manchester students will begin getting dismissed at 1:00 p.m. There will be no school on November 6th or November 25th for Pre-K students.

Conference Night Conferences will be held on November 17th, from 4:15 to 7:15 p.m. Please contact the school office to schedule a conference.

Thanksgiving Holiday In celebration of the Thanksgiving Holiday, schools will be closed from November 26th through November 27th. Donuts With Dad On November 17th and 18th the PTA will be sponsoring Donuts with Dad. What a great way to start the day. We hope to see many of our dads, step dads, grandfathers or other significant males who play an important part in the continued well being of our students, able to participate in this wonderful event. November 17th will be for students with last names beginning with the letters A to L and November 18th for students with last names beginning with letters M to Z. Donuts With Dad is held at the Manchester Activity Building.

Progress Reports Progress Reports will be sent home on November 11th, for all students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grades.

Lunch Room News

If you’d like to visit your child during their lunch break, please feel free to do so. Simply call the office the morning of your visit or the day before, if you’ll be buying lunch, and let us know that you are coming. We ask that you sample the delicious food our Cafeteria ladies make for our students, staff and parents every day. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD FROM A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT INTO THE SCHOOL.

 Breakfast is served every morning from 9:00 – 9:25, even on early dismissal days! The cost of breakfast is $1.50.  Lunch is served every day, even Early Dismissal Days! Please make sure your child has a lunch or lunch money.  If your child has to borrow lunch money, make sure they pay back what they borrow the very next day. The Cafeteria has a limited amount of money to lend students.  Thanksgiving “Dinner” will be served for lunch on Thursday, November 12.  If you send your child with a food item that requires a spoon or fork, please send the spoon or fork with them. The PTA has generously donated spoons and forks for the students to use at lunch time. Any donations of spoons and forks are greatly appreciated!  Once again, Baked Potatoes will be available on Tuesdays and Thursday.

Reminders  A photo ID is required when entering the building. Please make sure you have your ID ready when you come to the front doors.  Donations of tissues are greatly needed and appreciated by everyone!  There are a lot of clothes in Lost and Found. If you think your child has lost a piece of clothing, please have them go to the Cafeteria and check the Lost and Found bin.  If you will be volunteering, please do not bring your younger children with you to help. We love children and appreciate that you would like to help, but we need to consider the safety of the younger child and the distraction of other children.  Students and young adults (anyone under 18 years of age) should not be in any of the work rooms. This is also for safety reasons. Instrumental Music Notes - Mrs. Rees Congratulations to all of our 5th grade BAND members who performed at the MVHS football game last month - they did a great job representing Manchester Elementary! Our beginners (first-year students) continue to focus on their basic playing skills related to sound production, but are also working on improving their note reading skills as we begin learning more familiar “tunes”. String students recently began using the bow and continue to work on proper left hand and finger position. Please take note of our upcoming concerts:  Winter Concert (5th Grade Band, Orchestra, & Chorus) - Tuesday, December 8th (7:00 p.m.) and Wednesday, December 9th (9:30 a.m.). If needed, a snowdate is planned for Monday, December 14th.  5 th Grade STRING students will be performing at the 3rd annual “Northern Region” Event on Thursday, January 21, 2016. This year’s event will take place at North Carroll High School. Students will be combining their efforts with students from Ebb Valley Elementary, North Carroll Middle, and Manchester Valley High School. More information will be sent home once the details have been finalized.

Please continue to encourage GOOD PRACTICE HABITS at home! Help your child set up a regular time for practicing throughout the week – students should be recording their daily practice times on their chart. Practicing is essential for improvement and helps to build better fluency (playing with few or no mistakes) and confidence!

Health Room Information

Flu Mist – 1st Dose – Tentatively set for Monday, November 9th.

Medication Please remember that students are not allowed to transport medicine to or from school. All prescription and over-the- counter medicine taken at school must be transported by an adult and be in its original container, with the student’s name printed on the label (prescriptions). All medicine must be accompanied by a medication consent form completed by a physician and signed by the physician and the parent. These forms are available from the school office.

Clothing for the Nurse’s Office According to CCPS health policy, only new (unused) underwear may be given to students when needed. The health room is only able to stock a small amount of new underwear due to space and cost. We are asking that parents/guardians send in an extra set of underwear and clothing for their child to use if needed during the school day. Clothing should be labeled and will be stored in student lockers or cubbies. If your child needs to use underwear from the health room, please replace the underwear with a new pair as soon as possible. In the event that new underwear is not available, a parent/guardian will be contacted to bring in clean clothes for their child.

Fever Policy Fever is an elevation of the body’s normal temperature. Generally, a temperature of 100 degrees F (37.3 degrees C) or above may be considered a fever.

According to CDC guidelines, students who present with a temperature of 100 degrees or more shall not return to school until fever-free for 24 hours without medication.

Body temperatures are normally lower in the morning and a previously feverish student may again spike a fever as the day progresses. Volunteers- It takes countless hours and many volunteers to run all of the great PTA sponsored events throughout the year. There are many opportunities to support your school through volunteering and if everyone gives just a small amount of time (1-2 hours) a year, we would have more than enough help. I would encourage every family to try their best to help out with one event this year. Every little bit truly does help and it is amazing how much can be accomplished when we all pitch in.

Our Fall Book Fair is November 2nd – 6th and we will need lots of help throughout the week. If you are able to volunteer during the school day or from 5:30pm – 7:30pm on Tuesday, November 3rd for Family Night, please email Michelle Fadrowski at [email protected]. Thank you to everyone who helped at the Fall Fun Run. It was a great day and we couldn’t have done it without you!! Thanks to Michele Postol and Valerie Bortz for planning such a great event!
