The City of South Portland, a vibrant community of 25,000 located on picturesque Casco Bay and known for its working and recreational waterfront, air quality, retail and industry, and recently recognized as a New England Top 10 Best City based on economy/prosperity, safety, culture, health and quality of life, is seeking a Director of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront to join an innovative, proactive and dynamic workforce with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in municipal service.

This is a highly responsible administrative position in planning, developing, directing, supervising and evaluating the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department activities, operations, parks, facilities and staff. Required competencies and key areas of responsibility include regulatory compliance and reporting, budgeting, capital projects, fiscal control, policies & procedures, strategic planning, needs assessments, grants, alternative revenue sources, enterprise accounts, organizational and staff development, programming, parks and facilities maintenance, community centers, indoor pool, beaches, playgrounds, athletic fields, golf course, publicly owned facilities and properties, safety programs, community relations, effective communications, and the ability to work productively and cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers and the public. Work is performed with considerable initiative and independent judgment under the general direction of the City Manager.

The Director shall have demonstrated leadership, vision, experience and success in managing similar parks and recreation agencies/departments; competency with computers, software and technology; ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing; previous experience managing union and non-union employees, and collective bargaining agreements a plus.

Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Public Administration or related field of study is required; Master’s Degree preferred; with six (6) or more years of increasingly responsible experience in parks and recreation or a similar occupation, including three (3) or more years of managerial experience; Class C driver’s license and good driving record; Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) is desirable.
