TITLE / SUBJECT Six Flags Over Texas: A Cultural Feast
TIME FRAME 45-60 minutes research time plus homework
OBJECTIVES: Students will examine various cultures that have influenced Texas as represented by the six national flags of Texas as well as other cultures known to have influenced Texas. Students will prepare a dish representing one of the cultures of Texas.
TEKS: Language Arts: (4.4) Listening/speaking/culture. The student listens and speaks both to gain and share knowledge of his/her own culture, the culture of others, and the common elements of cultures.
Social Studies: (4.20) Culture. The student understands the contributions of people of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups to Texas.
(Can extend lesson to include discussion based on this TEK) Health Education: (4.1) Health information. The student recognizes ways to enhance and maintain health throughout the life span. The student is expected to: (A) identify the benefits of six major nutrients contained in foods.
LIBRARY SKILLS: Students will utilize the Big Six to learn about various cultures in Texas.
MATERIALS: Handout: Six Flags Over Texas: A Cultural Feast
PROCEDURES: Introduction: Tell students that they will be learning about various cultures of Texas based on the six national flags of Texas and other cultures as represented in the state today. They will be completing research and will be preparing a cultural feast. Give date for feast as agreed upon by the teacher.
Display the six flags and ask students to tell what cultures/countries they represent. Write these down on the board or on a large piece of paper. Ask students to identify other cultures that are present in their community and within the state. Write these down also. Discuss briefly how these various cultures have contributed to Texan culture as it is today. Distribute the handouts and give directions orally. Brainstorm types of information sources. Also, discuss possible words to look for in the index and keywords for online searches.
EVALUATION: Classroom teacher may wish to assign a grade based on completion.
