Ursuline High School Plans Back-To-School Activities

1. Orientation Days

All incoming Freshmen will report for orientation on Monday, August 21st at 7:50 A.M. until 12:00 noon. The Freshmen will follow an abbreviated schedule to meet with all of their subject teachers. As part of the Freshmen Success Program, they will also meet their National Honor Society Mentors and will be treated to a picnic lunch on the school grounds.

All transfer students will report from 10:00 A.M. until noon on Monday, August 21st for an orientation session and enjoy a picnic lunch at the Shrine.

2. Opening Day

The opening day for all students is Tuesday, August 22nd. All students must be in uniform. 2017 is Ursuline High School’s 112th school year of Catholic education in the Mahoning Valley.

3. Estimated Enrollment

The estimated enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year is 470: 250 boys and 220 girls.

4. Number of Administrators, Staff Members, etc.

The faculty will include 3 Administrators, 1 Diocesan Priest, 1 Ursuline Sister and 35 lay persons.

5. New Staff Members

Ursuline will welcome new staff this year. Mrs. Michelle Carosella will join the Administration as the Assistant Principal for Academics. She has most recently served as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Diocese of Youngstown, Office of Catholic Schools. She earned her Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Toledo and Masters of Education at John Carroll University. She has worked at the Solon City Schools as an interventionist where she designed instruction for students with disabilities, as a teacher for students with limited English proficiency, as a third grade teacher as well as a media specialist.

Mrs. Katy Perse has been hired as the Health and Physical Education Teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mount Union University and an MS from Cleveland State University. She previously taught at Gilmour Academy.

Mr. Mark Uerling is the new chair of Mathematics Department. He holds both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Linda Lucarell Miller is the new chair of the Religious Education Department. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Education from Youngstown State University, a Masters Degree from Loyola University New Orleans and a Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary (Cleveland).

6. New or Revitalized Programs

Ursuline High School is expanding the Advanced Placement Program. A new STEM course has been added for the 2017-18 school year. Eligible Juniors and Seniors may enroll in Advanced Placement Computer Science where they will learn the underlying principles of computation as well as the creative aspects of programming, abstractions, algorithms, cybersecurity and more. Ursuline currently offers 12 AP course in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Foreign Languages. Seven additional AP courses are offered as online options. Honors Chemistry and Digital Photography II are new to the curriculum as well.

The cafeteria was completely renovated this summer. This included a new stage, flooring, doors, furniture, LED lighting, storage space, HVAC system and religious artwork. It is now handicap accessible as well. The total project cost was $450,000. The project was completed by the A.P. O’Horo Company.

Classrooms and the gymnasium received fresh coats of paint.

Windows blinds were installed in every classroom in the entire original wing of the school.

The chapel, art room and video conference/distance learning lab also received major renovations including LED lighting, flooring, ceiling, updated technology and asbestos removal.

New iMac computers were purchased.

The Thomas F. Carey Practice Field underwent a field rehabilitation. The Ursuline Home and School Association will begin its 33rd year of active participation in school activities. The Executive Board of the Home and School Association has planned class dinners and a Reverse Raffle Dinner.

The Feast of Saint Ursula, patroness of our school, will be celebrated with a Liturgy on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the school gymnasium.

The 15th Anniversary Annual Auction ~ Celebrate Our Legacy ~ will take place on Saturday, November 11th at Ursuline High School. Reservations are $65. The evening will begin at 6:00 P.M. with cocktails and bidding on silent auction tables and the live auction. 7. Opening of School Liturgy

The opening of school prayer service led by Ursuline President, Rev. Richard Murphy (’72), is scheduled for Friday, September 1st at 10:00 A.M. in the school gymnasium.
