Facebook Page

This is the one required piece of the multigenre paper that you will be doing part of in class. After we have worked on the page, it is your job to add more to the Facebook page based on what you have read in the book. You are required to have a detailed amount in the likes/dislikes, contact information, about me section, favorite quotations, Education and Work, current city (west or east egg)—just like a normal Facebook page. I also want you to add ambitions, fears, childhood on the back of the page. The point of this exercise is so that you as a reader can get to know the main characters. You are not required to turn in all of the characters for the paper, just one, although you will be doing Daisy, Tom, Gatsby, Nick, and Jordan in class with a group. Out of this group of pages, you are required to choose one for your multigenre paper.

Biography

The biography is a detailed description of a characters life. The only characters this section will work with would be Gatsby, Daisy, or Nick—because we really don’t get enough information about the other characters lives. You may find the Facebook page quite useful for the exercise. You are required to write a two-page biography for one character in the book. It can be written in 5-paragraph form, but is not required to. In the biography you should have, childhood, love life, dreams, and obviously, what happens to characters at the end of the book.

Formal Essay

This option is another two page assignment. You are required to answer the following question: What is the American Dream to you? How is your American Dream different from Jay Gatsby’s, and lastly how is Jay’s view of the American Dream different from Nicks? Please cite your quotations in MLA format. If you have trouble with this, please don’t hesitate to ask for help.

You can also write an essay on the similarities of “Winter Dreams” and The Great Gatsby, as we discussed in class there are many common themes and elements that you can find in each story.

News Article

This piece is a description of a specific event in the book. This is a one-two page assignment. A couple of options in the book would be, the car accident, the Jay and Daisy’s love story, Tom’s affair, the death of Jay Gatsby—although these are not limited. You may choose whatever instance you find most interesting. You are required to answer the main questions in essay form. Who? What? Where? When? and Why?

Short Story

If you did not like the ending of the novel, here is your chance to change it! You may re- write the end of the novel in whichever way you choose. I am leaving this choice quite open the only requirement is that is two pages long, and you try and imitate Fitzgerald’s form of writing, using symbolism and imagery (which we will go over in class).

Symbol Writing

As a class, we discussed the different symbols mentioned throughout the book and what their possible meanings were. In this piece, you are required to choose one of the symbols we talked about in class, find at least four examples of them in the book, and analyze them within your paper. When I say analyze, I want you to show how, and why they were important in the place of the book where you found them, and then at the end of the paper explain why the symbol was important to the overall book, and what function it played. Spark notes does a great job of explaining what the symbols mean, but it is up to you to find new and interesting ways to explain the symbols within your own words and examples.
