Campus Recruiter Application Overview 2010-2011

“When working for Breakthrough I always feel as though I am a part of a national body working toward education equity. Recruiting great summer teachers is a crucial element to the functioning of the program which made me feel connected to the national movement.”

- Ashley Gunter Breakthrough teacher (2008) Campus Recruiter (2008-2009)

“I have never had a more fulfilling experience than my summer teaching at Breakthrough Collaborative. It has influenced me to have a career in education. Breakthrough changes lives and it is the strong enthusiasm and dedication of the college students who push this effort forward. We need to continue to recruit these highly motivated students to our programs.”

- Jamie Alter Breakthrough teacher (2004) Campus Recruiter (2004-2005)

“Every conversation gave me a chance to express my joy and satisfaction about being a part of the Breakthrough Family. Each day reminded me that I was doing something great in the field that I am going to pursue.”

- Nicole Masole Breakthrough teacher (2009) Campus Recruiter (2009-2010)

“For me, it was really exciting to have an opportunity to teach people about Breakthrough, spread the word about an organization that I truly believe in, and look for people who would be able to teach my kids after this summer. I loved getting to tell people about Breakthrough - how formative the experience has been for me, the impact the program has on everyone involved, and why programs like Breakthrough are so important right now. It was also great to see that there ARE other college students who care about these issues, especially at a school like mine that has so little to offer in terms of studying or being involved in education.”

How did Breakthrough create this list and why isn’t my wonderful campus on it? We weighed our limited financial and human resources against the need to both maintain our current high level of applicants and boost our numbers in key areas. We created this list based on the following criteria:  Strong Breakthrough presence on campus that needs to be deepened  Proximity to a Breakthrough site to support local recruitment for summer and school year teachers  Capacity to engage underrepresented groups in field of teachers (People of Color, Males, Science-Technology-Engineering-Math majors)  A commitment to service on campus, indicated by policies that support and encourage student involvement in programs like Breakthrough Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: If my school isn’t on the Target Campuses list, can I still sign up? A: Absolutely! We still welcome your participation. Though we only provide on-going check-ins (focused on a campus strategic plan and asset map) for the recruiters at these listed schools, we will still invite you to our phone trainings, send you our training and recruitment materials and include you in our online network so you can recruit at your school. Simply fill out and return this application to make your case!

And, as always, our Teacher Network Specialist is available by phone or e-mail to answer any questions and provide guidance. If you are able to open up a niche for Breakthrough at your school, it will improve the odds that we will invest there in the future.

Q: Can I think about it and let you know later? A: Yes, but the deadline for final application is September 13. Early applicants will receive preferential treatment.

Q: Why is the deadline so early? A: In a post recruitment campaign survey last year, recruiters overwhelmingly requested more time to build relationships on campus, host info sessions and application workshops to meet their goals.

Q: Am I going to be all alone on my campus? A: Not at all. It’s a central strategy of our recruitment campaign to engage other Breakthrough Teacher Alumni to support your recruitment efforts. You’ll learn the best ways to do that during Recruiter Training. You’ll receive a roster of teachers on your campus to help you out. Additionally, we enlist the help of directors and alumni in the area, as well as working with partner organizations like Teach For America to strengthen our campus recruitment nationwide.

Q: I recruited for Breakthrough last year. What do I do? A: If you are a returning recruiter, please fill out this online application.

Q: Who do I contact for more information? A: Dave Bryson Teacher Network Specialist [email protected] (415) 442-0600 x106
