Welcome to Geology – the study of the world around you. Our topics will include a bit of Astronomy (study of outer space), and mostly the Geological Sciences (study of rocks, earthquakes, volcanoes and plate tectonics, mapping, glaciation, weathering, landforms, and the age of the earth.)

We will use hands-on experimentation, activities, and direct instruction. You will be enabled to learn the ‘how’ and ‘why’, not just the ‘what’ of science. I will show how Earth Science is relevant in your everyday life; you must provide the willingness to learn.

MATERIALS We will be using on occasion the classroom set of books : “Essentials of Geology”, seventh edition, by Lutgens and Tarbuck that will be kept in the classroom. Other readings will be provided to you or offered online.

Bring to class everyday: Composition Book and/or a Science Binder/folder with paper - see below Pencil and/or Pen (dark blue or black ink only) Highlighters, three colors Optional but useful: Calculator, colored pens and/or pencils, scissors, ruler

RULES AND EXPECTATIONS 1. Arrive prepared to learn (mentally ready and equipped with the correct materials) 2. Never prevent others from learning (inappropriate behavior or talking) 3. Always follow safety rules during lab (prevent injures) 4. Do not take or damage any classroom equipment 5. Participate in class discussions, activities and complete all assignments

BEHAVIOR STEPS AND CONSEQUENCES 1. First offence: student-teacher conference 2. Second offence: student-teacher conference and parent-teacher conference 3. Third offence: referral to counseling office per student handbook 4. Serious offence: referral to Assistant Principal.

ATTENDANCE/TARDY POLICY

Being late and missing class causes you to miss valuable information. Greeley West’s attendance/tardy policy will be enforced. Consequences per Semester for being tardy are as follows: 1st and 2nd tardy = verbal warning, 3rd and 4th tardy = call to parents. Thereafter, the tardy policy in the student handbook will be enforced. When you are tardy to class you must sign the tardy form by the door. If you do not sign the form then there is no record that you arrived and you may be considered absent for that period.

HOMEWORK AND ASSIGNMENT POLICY Homework will be given anywhere from 1 to 4 times per week (depending on the pace of the class) and should take the average student approximately 30 minutes to complete. Most assignments will be completed in class.

MAKE-UP/LATE ASSIGNMENTS  Greeley West’s High School make-up and late work policies will be enforced.  All assignments will be given a due date when they are assigned.  No late work will be accepted past the 2 days allowed for and excused tardy. Unexcused absences can be made up for half credit within the 2 days of the absence. PEDRIOD!!!!  Per the student handbook, you will be allowed to make up work for full credit if you have an excused absence.

You will be given the same number of days you were absent to turn in your work.  Make up tests will be given 2 days to fit with student's schedule  Openers are based on participation and cannot be made up even if the absence is excused.  If you missed a lab, you must arrange a make-up time to occur within one week.  If you have an In-house Suspension, assignments are due as if you were in class. You must come to me before the tardy bell to receive the work of that day.  You will be allowed to make up work given during an off campus suspension; however, you must see me the day you return for the due dates.

IF YOU ARE ABSENT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT ASSIGNMENTS YOU MISSED.

GRADING POLICY  Your Semester grade will be based on Tests, Quizzes, & Projects - 40%, Labs, Activities, and Notebook;50%, Participation/21st Century skills- 10%  Your letter grade is determined by the following percentages: A = 89.6 -> 100% B = 79.6 –> 89.5% C = 69.6 –> 79.5% D = 59.6 –> 69.5% 59.5 -> Below = F

CHEATING Cheating on all assignments, tests, etc. is forbidden. If you cheat on an assignment, you will be given a grade of zero(F) for that assignment. This includes those that provide answers as well as those that copy answers.
