[3749-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO DECLARE MAY 2013 AS “BLADDER CANCER 12 AWARENESS MONTH” IN SOUTH CAROLINA, TO 13 PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING OF THE GROWING RISK OF 14 BLADDER CANCER IN THE UNITED STATES, TO 15 ENCOURAGE RESEARCH IN THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY 16 TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSES AND DEVELOP A CURE FOR 17 THE DISEASE, AND TO COMMEND BOY SCOUT TROOP 2 18 FROM SUMMERVILLE FOR ITS EFFORTS IN THIS 19 ENDEAVOR. 20 21 Whereas, bladder cancer is cancer that forms in tissues of the 22 bladder, the internal organ that stores urine, with most bladder 23 cancers presenting as transitional cell carcinomas, beginning in 24 cells that normally make up the inner lining of the bladder; and 25 26 Whereas, while the exact cause of bladder cancer is uncertain, 27 several factors may make people more likely to develop it, such as 28 cigarette smoking, exposure to chemicals at work, chemotherapy, 29 radiation treatment, and chronic bladder infections; and 30 31 Whereas, the National Cancer Institute estimates that in the United 32 States 72,570 new cases of bladder cancer will be reported in 2013 33 and that 15,210 deaths will result from the disease; and 34 35 Whereas, according to the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, 36 although bladder cancer is the fifth leading type of cancer and is a 37 growing type of cancer among women, research for the disease 38 receives little support; and 39 40 Whereas, this winter in South Carolina, Boy Scout Troop 2 from 41 Summerville completed a fiftymile hike to raise funds for bladder

[3749] 3 1 cancer research and awareness of the disease after Joe Justis, one 2 of the Scouts in the troop, lost his grandmother to the disease; and 3 4 Whereas, to underscore the important challenges associated with 5 bladder cancer, the South Carolina General Assembly wishes to 6 recognize May 2013 as “Bladder Cancer Awareness Month” 7 throughout the Palmetto State. Now, therefore, 8 9 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 10 concurring: 11 12 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 13 resolution, declare May 2013 as “Bladder Cancer Awareness 14 Month” in South Carolina, promote understanding of the growing 15 risk of bladder cancer in the United States, encourage research in 16 the medical community to identify the causes and develop a cure 17 for the disease, and commend Boy Scout Troop 2 from 18 Summerville for its efforts in this endeavor. 19 20 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 21 Boy Scout Troop 2 of Summerville, South Carolina. 22 XX 23
