A well written lesson plan should include each of the following elements, preferably in this order.
Dress for Success Applies to all career clusters Modified for 8th grade-senior
National/State Content Standards 1.2.2 Demonstrate job seeking and job keeping abilities 1.2.8 Demonstrate work ethics and professionalism Background Data Time Frame: 50 minute class period Concept: Dress for success- tips to dress for interviews and every-day appropriate work wear Objective(s) for this lesson: to identity appropriate interview and workplace dress
Resources Used/Supplies Needed: Include all resources used to develop the lesson as well as supplies needed for learning activities. Be sure to list any website sources including the url for the site. Consider the following: Old magazines (5-10 depending on class size) Scissors (1 for each student or 1 for every two students) Glue sticks (1 per students or 1 for every two students) Computer Projector & speakers Dress up materials (see motivational activity below) White board/ marker You Tube Video – Job Search 101: Dress for Success http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DthXOQGVgtA o Annenburg Career Development Center, Brad Karsh Office Dress Code: What to Wear to Work, Melissa Dylan o http://workplaceculture.suite101.com/article.cfm/office_dress_ code o Enough copies for every student Computer paper/ construction paper o One for every student Time Motivation/Set Time 3 min Set the stage and/or motivate the learner – introduction to the lesson
Write on white board o “Today you will be my potential employer. I am going to come in and introduce myself before our interview. Let me know if you would hire me” Play dress up o Walk into the classroom with lipstick on my teeth and all over my mouth, throw hair up in a pony tail, and put on an unflattering and non-age appropriate blazer with an overwhelming number of accessories o Grab the students hands and shake them several times while babbling incoherently Follow up o Teacher question “ Would any of you consider hiring me for whatever position you are looking to fill?” wait for shaking of heads, students answering “no”, if no immediate response, ask students that would hire me to raise their hand- then ask “who wouldn’t consider hiring me?” “Why?-that’s what were going to learn about today” o Have students share what aspects of my outfit and personality were inappropriate for an interview- students record these in their notes
Body of Lesson 5 min Transition from motivational activity and have students discuss with their neighbor the reasons why they would not hire me After 1 minute have the students get out a piece of notebook paper and prompt each group to share the observations they made about why they would not hire me- require the students to write down the information their classmates share. During this time- prepare computer, projector and screen Bring up the YouTube video Job Search 101: Dress for Success from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DthXOQGVgtA 3 min for Video 2 min On the white board, write things from the spokesperson in the video that correspond with the things the students mentioned Making a good first impression Wearing clothes that fit Being conservative Tasteful, modern and appropriate Nice make-up
12 min Divide the students up by numbering the students so two are in each group Have the students move next to their partner and hand out copies of “Office Dress Code: What to wear to work” to each student Prompt the students to read the article and write down important information they encounter. Wait until all the students are finished reading and have everyone come back and stress the main points of the article (write on white board, Smart board, or prepare a simple power point) Interview is purely business attire o Do not want employer to remember you for portion of your outfit – “flip flop girl” or “hair gel boy” o Cover tattoos o Piercings (only one in each ear) should only be visible on your ears o Women: . Wear close-toed shoes . Panty hoes . Simple jewelry o Men . Shine shoes . Trim facial hair before interview . Wear a tasteful tie Always dress for job, location, and type of work o Be appropriate for certain office atmospheres o Dress for the job tasks you have to do (chefs would not wear a business suit) o Pay attention to what others wear to work and follow suit

Assessment 15 min Fashion show: Have students use magazines to find interview appropriate outfits. Students need to choose appropriate hair styles, and tops and bottoms from different resources to combine to make one complete outfit Requirements: two outfits for every student- need to compile different accessories, tailored shirts and suits from magazines to make two complete outfits-one for a male and one for a female The students need to make at least 4 points (on each outfit) denoting why they chose the interview outfits they did (total worth is 20 points for completion, neatness, and points about outfits)
