Production and Technical Manager

Job Role and Description

Reporting to the Head of Performance, this role is responsible for management and day-to-day running of all technical and production requirements of the PDSW programme of performances and activities. Our programme includes performances, workshops, masterclasses, conferences and film screenings both at our venue, Pavilion Dance, and off site - indoors and outdoors. This is a hands-on role, and the post holder will provide the highest quality technical operation of the venue, as well as excellent technical support to clients hiring spaces within Pavilion Dance.

Responsibilities of the role include,

Technical Support: planning, rigging and operating sound/lights/projector and other equipment as required during performances; supporting presentations and conferences with audio and visual equipment as required; maintenance of equipment and technical facilities at Pavilion Dance; and supporting artists to find the best lighting and sound solutions for their performance

Management: administration, production management, project planning, and line-managing the in-house technician and freelance technical staff

Production: Supporting the delivery of the organisation’s artist development programme, working alongside resident artists during the creation and production of new work; supporting the production planning for the venue for recurring and future major events.

Responsible to: Head of Performance

Works closely alongside: Producer (Programme & Artist Development) Staff in the Performance, Engagement and Venue teams

Salary: £27,500 – £30,000

Terms: Full time permanent contract. Probationary period: 6 months. Notice period: 2 months.

Holiday entitlement: 25 days and bank holidays

Hours: 37 hours per week on average across a year

Base: Pavilion Dance South West, Bournemouth

This role includes shift work, night and weekend working, working at height and manual lifting

Detailed key responsibilities 1 Technical Management 1. Ensure that the highest technical and artistic standards are achieved in every aspect of the production process 2. Offer strategic advice and support to the Leadership Group on the future technical and development needs of the venue as a presenting and producing dance house. 3. Line manage and support the role of Technician, offering a positive and supportive environment and empowering their development 4. Contract and brief freelance technicians, as required 5. Liaise with companies regarding technical requirements, providing support and advice 6. Support artists and companies with work in development and other venues as appropriate 7. Develop and maintain excellent working relations with partner venues, including BHLive technical staff 8. Liaise with the Venue & Events Manager in the technical planning and support of external hires in the venue 9. Prepare risk assessments for the performances, equipment and events in collaboration with the Front of House Manager (facilities and technical) 10. Manage the annual PAT testing of all technical equipment and ensure all technical equipment is on the technical inventory 11. Manage the technical consumables budgets

Technician Duties 1. Set up and run events at Pavilion Dance or any other location as required by the programme 2. Participate in rehearsals and production meetings 3. Design and programme lighting and sound for any PDSW or hire event as required 4. Comply with working at height, LOLER, COSHH, PPE, PUWER regulations and ensure the theatre and technical storage areas are kept safe and tidy 5. Clean, maintain and repair all technical equipment and assist with any general maintenance of Pavilion Dance 6. Assist the FOH team with the set up of technical equipment in spaces for classes/meetings 7. Supervise any trainees, volunteers and casual staff

Production Management 1. Support the production planning and delivery of our broad programme of events and performances 2. Support the delivery of the organisation’s artist development programme, working alongside resident artists during the creation and production of new work 3. Manage project / production budgets 4. Provide support and technical advice to the AUB Dance Degree programme

Administration

2 1. Use our administrative tools on shared drives, and in Google (e.g. Gmail and Google Calendar), keeping documents and calendars up-to-date and responding swiftly to email communications 2. Use our shared documents and online HR tools to line-manage the Technician efficiently and effectively 3. Prepare technical rotas in response to the programme and venue needs, and share with the Head of Performance and Venue & Events Manager 4. Contribute to evaluation reports for hires and programmes 5. Keep up to date with developments in the industry, changes to regulations and lead on updating infrastructure and kit as required

Other 1. Become part of the wider PDSW staff team 2. Attend staff meetings and other relevant meetings 3. Be willing to do training to increase and widen knowledge and skills 4. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post 5. Work in accordance with the values and policies of Pavilion Dance South West

Person Specification Essential  Relevant Technical Theatre qualification or equivalent  At least 3 years professional technical experience in/with dance and able to evidence high-level competency in the operation & design of lighting & sound equipment under performance conditions  Experience in communicating and liaising effectively with professionals such as producers, performers, designers, choreographers, musicians and directors  Up to date awareness of Health & Safety legislation, LOLER, PUWER and risk assessments  Rigging experience  Demonstrable ability to provide effective customer service  Experience of working at heights with elevated platforms (IPAF 3A licence)

Desirable  Experience of managing staff and organising rotas  Experience of touring or providing technical support for professional contemporary dance productions  Experience of working on outdoor events and of planning and delivering technical staffing and equipment for complex multi event occasions  Experience of working alongside artists during the creation of new work  Electrical qualification  Current clean driving licence  Use of Congo lighting control and Soundcraft/Yamaha Sound Mixers  CAD Drawing (Auto Cad Lite & Visio)  Trained in First Aid  Enhanced DBS
