In addition to all of the great HEP and CAMP sessions scheduled for the main portion of the conference (note: per feedback from all of last year’s participants we expanded the sessions to 75 min. each) 2015 will be the first year we will offer a pre-conference meeting and it will be dedicated to HEP instruction.
Daphne Atkinson from GED Testing Service will the present a three hour session Sunday morning titled: Teaching Constructed Response for the GED® Test: RLA, Social Studies & Science. Data is starting to show that students are struggling with constructed response so Daphne will focus on integrated reading and writing strategies for the GED® test. During this session, participants will explore the skills needed for students to become more effective readers and writers. Hands-on learning activities will help participants use the rubrics as both instructional and evaluative tools in Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA), Science, and Social Studies.
We have found that if teachers are knowledgeable on how to critique their students' writing they are better able to guide students on how to improve and more accurate in assessing when students are ready to test. So, this session will also focus on providing hands-on practice in scoring student responses for RLA, Social Studies, and Science. Participants will become familiar with the performance expectations for each content area and review student responses. Skill-building activities will allow participants to work with the scoring tools and Rubrics as well as gain insight into what is essential to improve student performance.
On Sunday afternoon the three hour workshop will focus on teaching strategies for Algebraic and Mathematical Reasoning for the new HSE tests. Anthony Chan will present classroom nstruction strategies that will help students master the competencies needed for the new HSE tests. Anthony is fluent in English and Spanish develops curricula and training in both languages. Q & A will be in English and Spanish.
On Monday, during the regular portion of the conference, both presenters will give a 75 minutes talk. Daphne will present updates on the GED 2014 and Anthony will be conducting a math workshop in Spanish.
