2. “CARE+ Kenya: Localization of a Computer Counseling Intervention to Support Antiretroviral Adherence Support and Reduce HIV Transmission in Eldoret, Kenya” Principal Investigator: A Kurth, RN, CNM, PhD (PI), Abraham Siika, MD, co-PI Agency: NIMH Type: R34 Period: 9/1/06 submission score 192, main critique- reviewers want to see US efficacy data first; will resubmit Sept. ’07 when US data available Amount: $425,000 Establish acceptability, feasibility, and potential effect size of a longitudinal HIV computer counseling intervention in Kenya. Localize ‘CARE+ Kenya’ tool into Kiswahili and conduct a pilot randomized clinical trial with HIV-positive adults on ARTs in an urban and rural clinic in western Kenya, n=40 to intervention and 40 to attention control arm, 2 month follow-up.

3. “Global Partnerships for Social Science Research on AIDS in Kenya” Principal Investigator: M Morris, PhD; A Kurth, RN, CNM, PhD, PI of research substudy Agency: NIH Type: R24 Period: Received 1 of top 2 scores, now pending council award determination Amount: $2,425,945 This five-year grant will enhance capacity for sociobehavioral HIV research in Kenya. Kurth will lead one of three substudies conducting translational research of a secondary HIV prevention intervention delivered in HIV care settings.

5. “A Randomized Trial of a Computer-Based System using Cell Phones to Enhance Medication Adherence and Deliver Prevention Messages for People Living with HIV in Peru” Principal Investigator: Walter Curioso, MD; A Kurth, RN, CNM, PhD co-PI Agency: NIH Type: GRIP award Period: Under final review 5/07 Amount: $150,000 direct This study will develop and evaluate an interactive computer-based intervention using cell phones to enhance adherence to highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) and to deliver prevention messages in adult HIV-positive patients in Peru. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial comparing standard-of-care with standard-of-care plus cell-phone-intervention among patients on HAART.

6. “Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Resource and Support Center (FICRS)” Principal Investigator: King K. 7. “Patient Portal to Support HIV Disease Treatment Adherence” Principal Investigator: S Katz, PhD, Group Health; A Kurth, RN, CNM, PhD consultant Agency: NIMH Type: R01 Period: Submitted 1/5/07 Amount: $2,250,000 This study will design and field test a behavioral intervention that will use an electronic medical record (EMR) patient portal at Group Health Cooperative and Kaiser Permanente, to improve antiretroviral medication adherence among HIV-positive enrollees.

8. “Vaginal Flora and HIV Risk” Principal Investigator: RS McClelland, MD, MPH; A Kurth, RN, CNM, PhD co-investigator Agency: NIAID Type: R01 Period: Submitted 1/3/07 Amount: $2,500,000 Study relationship between vaginal health and acquisition of HIV-1 and STDs by conducting a nested case-control study to compare vaginal flora in women who acquire HIV-1 vs. those who remain HIV-1-seronegative; utilizing broad-range 16S rDNA PCR assays to evaluate global changes in vaginal flora while practicing vaginal washing vs. after cessation of this practice; and conducting a prospective cohort study of the association between BV and acquisition of C. trachomatis and HSV-2.
