Class Rules: Consequences:

Respect yourself, others, and the classroom. 1st offense: Warning

Listen & follow directions. 2nd offense: Parent contact by teacher

Follow all KHS school policies 3rd offense: Office referral Classroom Goal: I believe all students have the ability to shape their own lives and society in positive ways. My goal this year is to have all students recognize their power and use that power to improve them- selves and their communities. We will use our studies of the English language and selected liter- ature to inform students’ vision and to increase their ability to make that vision a reality. In order to achieve this goal, we will need supplies, organization and procedures. These are outlined below. Materials for class: Everyday you need to bring the follow items with you: *recommended: memory stick/flash drive 1 -Composition Notebook (for in-class journal/bell work) 1 -3-ring binder (Any size) Loose leaf paper Dividers in the binder for the following sections: Writing/grammar, vocabulary, notes and handouts 1 Pocket Thesaurus or use of Thesaurus.com Writing utensils (Blue or Black ink/pencil) KHS Planner/Hall Pass Sheet (to be used as pass out of room) Highlighters and erasers **** If there is any difficulty obtaining these supplies, students may see me outside of class time to obtain used supplies in good condition. They are free of charge while supplies last!**** Bell work: At the beginning of every class, find your assigned seat, and immediately begin work on the day’s bell work. This assignment will be posted on the board/overhead with specific in- structions. You will need to have a composition notebook, which you will leave in a designated place in the classroom. You will receive a weekly grade for this work. You are to be in your seat and working when the bell rings. Turning in homework/late-work: When homework assignments are due you need to place your homework in the designated box while entering the class, before you sit down. You may not sit down and finish your homework during the bell work. If you have missed an assignment, you must give me an excused note to receive your make-up work. Make-up work must be turned in within 3 days of the original due date. Major projects and papers may NOT be turned in late. If you are going to be absent you need to make arrangements to get the work turned in on time. If there is an unforeseen emergency, please contact me ASAP. You may request work via email or by filling out a “Absent Work Needed” slip with the days you missed. Grading Policy: The school’s grading scale will be used A 100-93 Tests/Projects/Major Papers: 40% B 92-85 Quizzes/Essays: 30% C 84-77 Bell work/Participation: 15%

D 76-70 Homework/Class work: 15% F 69-0 *Work is graded on the total out of one hundred percent. Absence/late arrival: Please be seated and ready to begin at the appropriate time. If you are late, the school tardy policy will apply. “A tardy will be recorded for each student who arrives after the official start time for each class period. SWEEP & KEEP: Students who are not in the class- room after the door closes will be considered tardy. Students will receive an immediate conse- quence (ISD) for each tardy. Parents will be notified through the phone message system for each tardy. Students with excessive tardies are subject to more severe consequences.” Leaving the classroom: Do not ask me upon entering the room! KHS policy states that stu- dent may not leave the room the first 15 mins or the last 15 mins of class. You cannot leave the room until after bell work. Student must ask to leave the room before leaving. If not, you will receive a write up for skipping. Only one student can be out of the room at a time. Misuse of passes will result in a loss of privileges for that student. Obtaining help/contributing to class discussions: Raise your hand and I will help you. Also, please do not shout over others or use obscene language. Everyone has a right to be heard, not just you. Attention during presentations: While a student, another adult, or I am speaking to the class, please clear your desks and face the speaker. *Non-related materials: the use of make-up or any other materials not related to the class is not allowed. Where to find assignments: see the board for homework assignments posted for that day, along with a brief description of the schedule for the day. * Homework and assignments must be legible and neat to be counted as complete. Use loose- leaf paper; paper torn out or with ragged edges will not be accepted. All long-term papers and assignments must be typed and printed. Any assignment two pages or more must be stapled be- fore it is turned in. Promises to students: * If you ever feel I am doing a poor job of living up to these promises, please schedule an indi- vidual conference with me. I work very hard to make sure that I am true to my word.

I will always believe in your ability to succeed. This means my expectations are extremely high. I will demand your best at all times.

I will listen to you. I ask that you bring questions, concerns or comments to me in a calm, re- spectful manner at the appropriate time. Individual concerns should be addressed in individual conferences that can be arranged by seeing me before or after class.

I will respect you, and I will insist that others respect you in our class. Please let me know, in an individual conference, if you ever feel disrespected.

I will never assign work unless I can explain why it is important. I do not believe in busy work.

I will work hard for you. You are my students. I will stand up for you.

I will learn from you. You are smart people, and each of you brings experiences and perspec- tives to the class that will benefit the group. Please share your viewpoint every day! A few final comments… -Wait to be excused by the teacher, not the bell. DO NOT line-up at the door! You must remain in your seat until the bell. -Respect the rights of others by conducting yourself in a manner that creates an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. -Do NOT touch any materials on my desk, the board or the front overhead, unless you ask per- mission first. There are materials available for your use on the class work table/book shelf. KEEP THIS PACKET IN YOUR NOTEBOOK AT ALL TIMES. It should be the first sheet in your notebook all semester. I have read, understand and agreed to the rules and expectations for English II Honors for the se- mester. ______(student signature) ______(parent signature)
