SkillsUSA Texas Law Enforcement State Skills Contest

Written Exam (10 Points): Each contestant will take a written exam, which will encompass basic VICA knowledge questions (Approximately 20 questions) as well as law enforcement related questions. The exam will consist of 50 questions total. Contestants should pay close attention to the following Texas Penal Code Chapters: 9 section 9.41, 20 sections 20.01, 21 section 21.08, and 22 section 22.10.

Traffic Stop (20 Points): For this event contestants will perform a traffic stop from a stationary position. Starting in the patrol car each contestant will perform the stop using the seven step approach and will issue a citation to the violator if it applies.

Interview Board (20 Points): The contestant will participate in an oral interview board in which they will be given a scenario and will need to answer questions on how they would handle the incident. Contestants will be graded on their officer presence, tactical responses, and oral communication skills.

911 Hang up (20 Points): During this event the contestant will arrive at the location where the judge will advise the contestant when to start the exercise. Contestant will have cover/back up elements available if they need them, contestants are to deal with the incident and determine whether there is an offense or not.

Report Writing (30 Points): During this event contestant will be completing an arrest report with a short narrative regarding the details of the arrest. The contestants report writing skills will be tested.
