The students will be asked to do individual and group projects demonstrating concepts and techniques presented in class. Students will be expected to present 2-3 music activities in an elementary classroom with written plan and reflection. Evaluation will be based on class participation, quality of creative projects, quality of teaching videos from classroom presentations, and exams on central concepts of music pedagogy.

B. Rationale 1. Statement of the major focus and objectives of the course. This course is intended to provide the elementary education program housed in Rochester with a 1 credit course to meet licensure requirements for music teaching and pedagogy. The main objectives of the course are experiential learning in music, music’s value to the elementary classroom, possibilities for curriculum integration with music, and the connections of music and culture. 2. Specify how this new course contributes to the departmental curriculum. The department currently offers a 3-credit course called “Music for Elementary Teachers.” This course is being dropped by the Rochester program so this proposal provides a course that will fit the licensure requirements (in combination with the prerequisite music fundamentals course at RCTC). This course is being offered as a service to the Rochester education program. 3. Indicate any course(s) which may be dropped if this course is approved. Only the Rochester offerings will be affected—the 3 credit pedagogy and fundamentals course, Music for Elementary Teachers, will be discontinued in Rochester

If so, which department(s)? This course will increase the total credits required by the Rochester elementary education program by 1 credit. 2. 1. Would this course or program be taught with existing staff or with new or additional staff? If this course would be taught by adjunct faculty, include a rationale.
MUS 320, a 3-credit course with similar content, has always been taught by adjuncts in Rochester for the Rochester education program. This course will be dropped in favor of the course in this proposal. Adjuncts will continue to be used to provide this new 1 credit course unless room is available in a full-time faculty member’s load.
2. What impact would approval of this course/program have on current course offerings? Please discuss number of sections of current offerings, dropping of courses, etc.
This course will be offered in Rochester only and will replace a 3-credit course previously offered.
3. What effect would approval of this course/program have on the department supplies? Include data to support expenditures for staffing, equipment, supplies, instructional resources, etc.
