One in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. More than 1500 breast cancer survivors and hundreds of dedicated teams set out to change that statistic by participating in the 2004 Komen New York City Race for the Cure®, which will fund education, screening and treatment programs in Greater New York City and support national research for a cure. In particular, the breast cancer survivors highlight why the Race is such an important event. The Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the largest series of 5K run/walks in the world. Since its origination in Dallas in 1983, the Series has grown from one local race with 800 people to an international series of 114 races with over 1 million participants.
“This was a great day and a very successful Race for the Cure,” said Nicole Rubin, executive director of Komen Greater NYC. “We appreciate all of those who ran, walked, volunteered, pledged and cheered on for the cause.”
The Komen Race For The Cure® Series nationally is made possible through support received from the National Presenting Sponsor, Yoplait, and National Sponsors American Airlines, Ford Division, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg Company, New Balance Athletic Shoe, Quilted Northern And Silk® Soymilk.
Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Co-Sponsors are Re/Max and Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity. This year’s Komen Race For The Cure® Series National Honorary Chairman is five-time Olympian Francie Larrieu Smith.

The mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. The Greater New York City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1990 when friends of television journalist Benita Feurey, who died from breast cancer, vowed to keep her spirit alive.
Up to seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Greater New York City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation through the Race for the Cure® and other fundraisers is dedicated to fighting breast cancer in the five boroughs of New York City, on Long Island and in Westchester and Rockland Counties. Each year the Affiliate awards grants to local hospitals and community organizations to fund breast health programs for the medically underserved from education and outreach for garment workers in Chinatown, to transportation and support services for migrant workers on the East End of Long Island, to navigation for screening and treatment for underserved women in Harlem. With at least 25 percent of net proceeds supporting national research to find a cure, Komen Greater New York City will distribute more than $2.2 million in total to fight breast cancer this year.
