Description of previous projects and outcomes funded by RSC grants.
My most recent RSC grant was in 2010. The funding supported work on a series of drawings which were submitted, at that time, for exhibition opportunities. Through support from the grant the drawings were completed and resulted in the following professional presentations.
One person Exhibitions: Pump-house Art Center- LaCrosse, Wi Winona Art Center- Winona, Mn
Group- Nationally Juried Exhibitions: Beyond Audubon: Women Made Gallery, Chicago, Ill
Grants ( awarded due to work completed through the RSC grant) Artist Initiative Grant- Minnesota State Arts Board -2012 Capelli Foundation Grant for Artists- $500- 2012
4. Purpose. What are the intellectual, conceptual, or artistic issues? How does your work fit into other endeavors being done in this field? Intellectual, conceptual and artistic issues: I have been working on a body of drawings drawn with oil- sticks, the pieces explore the concept of what I have titled, the Double Landscape. The first step in working on this particular set of drawings, is to create images which are inspired by traditional landscapes but are reinterpreted through the use of minimalist sensibilities. The second step is to mount two minimalist landscape drawings side by side, thus creating a single drawing formed by the combination of the two. By melding two drawings into one, an interaction or rather a visual dialogue occurs between the two drawings. The idea for the drawings developed for me through observation of reflections of land in water along shorelines. I discovered there is a point where the line between land and water became ambiguous through the mixing of reflections,

There exists similarly ambiguous areas between sky and land, buildings and their surroundings, and such subjects as a boat and the water it is surrounded by, all are very visually rich and exciting.
How does you work fit into other endeavors being done in this field? While landscapes have been a topic for artists since the beginning of art- making, the genre of minimalist art has developed and evolved only throughout the last century. Minimalism has been a major influence in my own work for the past thirty years. This past year I went to Houston Texas, and Chicago Ill. to view respected collections of minimalist art. The travel was funded by the Minnesota State Arts Board through an Artist initiative Grant I received in 2012. Through combining the interest I have in minimalist imagery with the landscape, an interest I have developed based on my life in rural areas, it seemed natural to combine the two in my drawings. As the world’s landscapes are ever evolving through changing land use and industry expansion , the landscape as an art form is also evolving. I am in hopes that my drawings will continue to broaden and redefine the definition of what a landscape drawing is by presenting a contemporary interpretation of the landscape. My goal is that through working with the rich history of landscape art and applying minimalist qualities to those landscapes, I can continue to expand and redefine the landscape in art.
5. Feasibility. What qualifications do you bring to this project? I have been working on and producing a body of drawings in my studio for the past three years on the topic of minimalist landscapes. I was fortunate to receive a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board in 2012 to produce drawings that furthered my exploration of the minimalist landscapes which evolved into the beginnings of the series I titled TheDouble Landscape Series. What have you done/will you do to prepare for this project? To prepare for the project I will purchase the materials needed to complete the work and set aside the working time to create the pieces in my studio. I have already applied for and been awarded two exhibitions for the new drawings when they are completed.
The body of drawings I have worked on over the past three years has been selected by a jury of peers and exhibited at the following venues: solo exhibitions: Last Updated: January 2014 RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP, AND CREATIVITY GRANT: BUDGET INFORMATION Pump-house Center for the Arts: LaCrosse, Wi 2011 Winona Art Center- Winona, Mn 2012 North Mankato Library- North Mankato, Mn 2013 Waseca Art Center- Waseca, Mn 2014 – opening Feb. 21st, 2014
Group Nationally juried exhibitions: Robert Morris Gallery- Chicago, Ill 2014
What is the time period, i.e. summer, summer and academic year, academic year only? I will work on the body of drawings for the upcoming exhibitions during the summer of 2014 and during the academic year of 2014-2015
Is the work’s scope commensurate with the time period of the project? Based upon the work I have done previously I am confident that the time frame given will allow me the time necessary to produce the new drawings that will be exhibited at the art exhibitions of which they have already been juried into for exhibition on the dates provided below in the Project Design category.
6. Project Design. This should include a specific description of the project design and activities, including location, staff, schedules or itineraries, and desired outcomes.
My proposal is to create and continue producing and exhibiting new drawings in the Double- Landscape Series. The drawings have been accepted for and will be exhibited at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin in 2016. The jury process entailed viewing current work of artists that had submitted their work for review and offering exhibitions to artists based on the level of quality in their present work. My continuing work on the drawings will allow me to explore further the idea of the double-landscape concept and to also pursue other professional exhibition opportunities for the work. The drawings that will be produced have also been accepted for exhibition through the Healing Arts Program at the Hudson Hospital located in Hudson, Wi. My goal is produce 10-15 new drawings during the grant period.
