Business Leaders of Color

BACKGROUND

Chicago United launched the inaugural issue of the Business Leaders of Color publication in 2003. The publication features accomplished corporate and civic leaders who have achieved success as corporate executives and entrepreneurs and who are true civic leaders.

Chicago United developed the Business Leaders of Color publication in direct response to research data from its biennial Corporate Diversity Profile. The study measures the representation of people of color in corporate leadership in the boardrooms and executive suites of Chicago corporations. The research reflects an ongoing under representation of leaders of color relative to the available talent pool.

We know that business success in Chicago, as in most cities, greatly depends on personal relationships and informal networks. To strengthen the opportunity to develop and nourish these networks for leaders of color, Chicago United created the Business Leaders of Color publication.

The publication is continually met with enthusiasm, both from corporations and from the minority business community. The publication serves as a vehicle for introducing talented leaders into Chicago’s business networks, as well as a resource for organizations seeking to increase inclusion of diverse board candidates.

IDENTIFY NOMINEES

Chicago United is committed to producing the Business Leaders of Color publication biennially to spotlight diverse executive talent in the Chicago area. As we prepare to launch our next issue, we invite you to help us identify the next group of outstanding leaders of color.

We encourage you to review the diverse talent in your organization, in your network of business associates, and in the corporate and/ or civic boards on which you serve. Upon identifying business leaders of color who meet the criteria, please submit their names and contact information for nomination for Chicago United’s Business Leaders of Color publication.

SUBMITTING INFORMATION

It is extremely important that submissions be as complete as possible. Please consider that individuals performing the screening and ranking are made up of professionals from the Chicago metropolitan area. While a nominee may be well known in the Chicago area, he/she may not be known as well in the outlying suburbs or vice versa. Resumes and biographies can be provided and the information therein does not need to be restated on the nomination form. However, it is essential that all questions on the nomina- tion form be answered in their entirety within the information submitted. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Chicago United is looking forward to publishing the next Business Leaders of Color publication. Your participation in the nomination process will help to ensure that this publication is a success. Please review the following criteria carefully as you select your nominee(s). We encourage you to either complete the attached form for your nominee(s) or forward the nomination form to the nominee(s) for completion. Another option would be for Chicago United to forward the nomination form to your nominee(s), noting you as their nominator, and requesting that they provide completed nomination information. 1. Nominee is an individual of color (African American, Asian American/Pacifi Islander, Hispanic, or Native American). 2. Nominee is currently or has recently been professionally active in the corporate/business arena within the Chicago Metropolitan Area six County SMSA (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will Counties). Individuals who have experience solely in the civic, education, or nonprofi arena or who are located outside the six County SMSA will not be considered. Clarifi tion of Criteria 2: • Nominee is currently or has recently been professionally active in the corporate/business arena: Certainly major institutions such as hospitals and universities are “large businesses” and the senior leaders of those institutions are indeed operating in a business capacity. Therefore the CEO, COO, general counsel, CFO, CIO are examples of excellent candidates. The roles of university department chair, dean, or medical chief of staff, although prestigious, would not be considered a business role and would fall outside of the guidelines. • Individuals who have experience solely in the civic, education, or nonprofit arena: Here the phrase “experience solely” guides us in our thinking about the individual. An educator/teacher/professor may not be appropriate. However, a nominee who is a professor who also runs his/her own independent businesses as an entrepreneur is not “solely” an educator.

5. It is recommended that the Nominee currently serve as a director on at least two (2) boards of directors for corporate, civic, or nonprofi organizations. Nominee should have experience on at least one (1) nonprofi board. A nominee with no previous board experience will not be considered. 6. Nominee must have demonstrated strong leadership skills within their organization (e.g.,vision,strategy,change leadership, etc.) as well as signifi t community/civic involvement (special or unique projects) and must have demonstrated leadership in support of the development of other minority talent (e.g., mentoring) within their organizations. 7. Nominee has had a broad range of experiences and has a proven track record of demonstrated success in transitioning into various and different roles, e.g., from an individual contributor role into management, from a national to international assignment, from one functional area to another, from a staff position to a “line” position (P & L responsibility), etc. Nominee is able to effectively bring a broad perspective to narrow issues and topics and has demonstrated skill in leading successful teams. If possible, please include a recommendation from someone to whom the nominee has reported and from someone who has reported to the nominee along with the nomination form. Strict confidentiality is maintained with all nomination and nominee information. Business Leaders of Color Nomination Form
