How to Build a Rocket WYNN Lesson Plan

Description: A series of lessons to familiarize teachers with how the technology of WYNN 5.1 can enhance instruction and learning. After reading the book, Rocket Boys and viewing a movie clip from October Sky, the participants will explore the concept of building a rocket using WYNN as a tool for reading, researching, and writing about the topic. This lesson will focus on developing an outline to use when building the rocket. It is a detailed plan appropriate for novice users of WYNN.

Note: While this lesson was used with teachers, it could be adapted for student instruction.

Goals: 1. To familiarize the participants with WYNN’s four toolbars. 2. To learn about rocket building.

Objectives: 1. To familiarize participants with the Scan tools in WYNN. 2. To familiarize participants with the Clean-Up tool in WYNN. 3. To familiarize participants with the Web access tools in WYNN. 4. To familiarize participants with all the Outline tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar.

Procedure: 1. Scan the illustration of the rocket from Rocket Boys. (If you would like the scanning procedure instructions, please request them from [email protected] ) 2. Clean up the scan of the rocket. (If you would like the clean-up procedure instructions, please request them from [email protected].) 3. Using the Web button on the Blue File Management Toolbar, go to the Web page http://www.ehow.com/how_2052769_build-rocket.html. 4. Rotate to the Yellow Writing Toolbar. 5. Select text with the cursor from the Things You Will Need list. 6. Click the Extract tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar.

If the File List is not opened on the left-hand side of the screen, click on File List from the toolbar. 10.Click on How to Build a Rocket from the File List to return to the Web site. 11.Select text with cursor from the list of instructions. 12.Click the Extract tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar. 13.Click Selected Text. 14.Click on Use Selected Document. 15.Click Outline on the Yellow Writing Toolbar. New document will open. 16.For the title, type How to Build a Rocket. The word Title will be replaced. 17.Press Enter. 18.Next to I. type Things You Will Need. 19.Press Enter. 20.Type Steps for Building a Rocket next to II. 21.Press Enter. 22.Place cursor at the end of Things You Will Need. 23.Press Enter. 24.Press Tab. “A” will appear. 25.Click Document 1 from the File List to return to your document with extracted information. 26.With cursor, highlight the items in the Things You Will Need List. 27.Click the Copy/Paste tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar and then click Copy. 28.Click on How to Build a Rocket outline from the File List to return to the outline document. 29.Place cursor next to “A”. 30.Click the Copy/Paste tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar and then click Paste. All items will list. 31.Place cursor at the end of Steps to Build a Rocket. 32.Press Enter. 33.Click Document 1 from the File List to return to your document with extracted information. 34.With cursor, highlight the first sentence in Step 1. 35.Click the Copy/Paste tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar and then click Copy. 36.Click How to Build a Rocket outline from the File List. 37.Place cursor at the end of II. Steps to Build a Rocket. 38.Press Enter. 39.Press Tab. “A” will appear. 40.Click the Copy/Paste tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar and then click Paste. Sentence will appear next to “A”. 41.Place cursor at the end of the sentence. 42.Press Enter 43.Press Tab. “1.” will appear.

With cursor, highlight a supporting detail that you feel is important to the plan. 46.Click the Copy/Paste tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar and then click Copy. 47. Place cursor next to the “1.” 48.Click the Copy/Paste tool on the Yellow Writing Toolbar and then click Paste. 49.Continue to copy and paste the steps and their details until you have finished. 50.Save Document 1 with the name ‘How to Build a Rocket’ and save the outline, too. Print the outline.

Materials/Resources: Computer with WYNN 5.1, access to the Web site www.ehow.com, Rocket Boys, and October Sky

Assessment/Evaluation: Each participant will have an outline to follow to build a rocket.
