FIDE ZONE 4.3 TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP Maputo (Mozambique), 14th – 19th July 2008

Captains Log by Advocate Lyndon Bouah

The Zone 4.3 Team Championships is being held for the first time. FIDE, the world chess Federation is geographically organized by continent, zone and country. The FIDE Directory of 2003 listed 166 countries split into 21 zones, which are further aggregated into 4 continents.

Africa is divided into three zones which are basically geographically based. Zone 4.3 thus consists of the following countries in alphabetical order, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

At this particular event five countries are competing. The countries are Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Burundi and the host Mozambique. Interestingly Angola and Botswana traveled by road to Maputo. Each member country is entitled to field one team and the host may field a second team which they have declined to do. The team comprises of four players with one reserve.

There are three trophies for the first three places and then board prizes. Top Board will receive $250, second board $200, $150 for third, $100 for fourth and $50 for fifth board. The event is being played as a double round robin and will thus have 8 rounds. Each day the games start at 10am and the next round at 16h00.

So why Mozambique I hear you asking! Mozambique has not hosted many chess events. They hosted during the late 1990’s an African Junior Championships. They regularly send players to compete in the African Individual championships. They have also sent players to a few Olympiads as well making their debut in 1996 in Armenia.

Mozambique officially is the Republic of Mozambique is a country in southeastern Africa, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawia and Zambia to the northwest Zimbabwe to the west and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. It was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498 ( yes the same guy we all read about in primary school!) and colonized by Portugal in 1505. By 1510 The Portuguese had control of all the former sultanates on the east African coast. Portuguese trading posts and forts became regular ports of call on the new route to the east. ( Wikipedia)

In ancient times gold and, ivory and slaves from Zimbabwe were exported through the ports of Mozambique Island and Sofala. These trading centres were the southern most points of Islamic influence which had been created along the East African coast.

According to the CIA World Factbook Mozambique obtained their independence from Portugal on 25 June 1975. Economic dependence on South Africa, a severe drought and a prolonged civil war hindered the country’s development until the 1990’s. The ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique ( Frelimo) party obtained formally abandoned Marxism in 1989, and a new constitution the following year provided for multiparty elections and a free market economy.

A United Nations peace agreement between Frelimo and the Mozambique National Resistance forces ended the fighting in 1992. In December 1994 Mozambique underwent a transition when Mr. Joaquim Chissano stepped down after 18 years in office. His elected successor Mr. Armando Emelio Guebuza has continued the sound economic policies that encouraged foreign investment. Mozambique has seen very strong economic growth since the end of the civil war largely due to post-conflict reconstruction.

Round 1

So at 11h30 on a sunny Maputo day the zone 4.3 championships kicked off. We decided at the captains meeting last night that Angola will get the bye because of their driving heroics!

We were paired against minnows Burundi. It was their international event. On board On Board One the Burundi board one held on for quite some time before being overpowered by International Master Gluckman. The game did go the distance in terms of time.

On board two Nicholas was happy to go to a line where Black held all the trumps. He expressed his surprise that White chose 11. Kd2?! Enjoy Nicholas’s technique.

On board three Johan soon had his opponent at sixes and sevens when he employed an unorthodox opening.

On board four Calvin like Johan making their debut for the senior Protea team was a bit nervous! He however secured the point after fifty moves after missing a clear piece win on move 33 with Kg5! Instead of Kg7. He responded after the game that he saw a clear winning plan already so there was no reason to deviate from his intention of queening a pawn!

A good start for SA! Botswana beat the hosts 3.5/0.5

As we had a bye for round two we decided to do some teambuilding so we decided to walk 6 kilometres to the Maputo beachfront. This allowed us to see the sights and sounds of the City. We noticed that many of the streets were named after historical figures like Karl Marx, Ho Chi Min and the ever present Mugabe street.

A the beachfront when we finally arrived the team decided to beef up a bit so we had for the first time Seafood Espetada Kebab which consists of a number of seafood dishes placed on a kebab. It was delicious and we made a note to return later in the week. We met and saw many South Africans working here in Maputo. Mr. Eddie Price is the International Arbiter for the event. After handing in our team for round three we were able to prepare for round three.

Round 2

As we had a bye in round two I simply attach the games for your enjoyment. Angola beat Botswana 2.5 to1.5 which I was pleased most. Mozambique beat Burundi 4.0

The standings after round two was:

1. Mozambique 4.5/8 2. Botswana 5/8 3. South Africa 4/4 4. Angola 2.5/4 5. Burundi 0/8

The team now prepared for the Round three and it was decided to rest Calvin and that Kgaugelo would make his debut against Botswana.

Round 3

In round Three we had hard fought battles! IM David played an enterprising pawn sacrifice f4! Which freed up his pieces. Students should study the game for his active play.

On board two Nicholas illustrated his fine technique by outplaying Ignatius Njobvu who essayed Nf6 in a Caro- Kann which left him saddled with double pawns on the f file.

On board three Johan overpowered his opponent after his opponent went for too much with a queen and knight on the Kingside. Note the interesting mate!

On board 4 Kgaulego made his debut. He told me last night that he was going to sacrifice and then on move 44 he did! So we beat Botswana 4 nil which was a good score.

Our chief rivals Angola played their best and also won 4 nil.

Standings after round three was

1. SA 8/8 2. Angola 6.5/8 3. Mozambique 4.5/12 4. Botswana 5/12 5. Burundi 0/8

Round 4

Everyone expected Angola to beat Burundi 4 nil. Instead the celebration was with Burundi when they unexpectedly won on board one to secure their first international point. Well done to Yves!

For South Africa we won 3.5 to 0.5 Nicholas suffered an unexpected lapse of concentration on board one against the Mozambican board one Viageiro Mateus. His combination cost him a piece but he was able to salvage a draw what was arguably a lost position! As they say every half point counts! The three debutants Johan, Calvin and Kgauegelo are still firing on all cylinders. The big clash is tomorrow morning we Wednesday 16 July 2008 when SA plays Angola!

SA now leads Angola by 2 points due to their loss on Board one.

SA has 11.5/ 12 Angola 9.5 /12 Botswana 5/12 Mozambique 5/16 Whilst Burundi recorded their first win with 1/12.

Round 5

In round five we played Angola and drew 2 all. On board one IM David lost in an Alehkine’s Defence to IM Aderito Pedro. Pedro came second at the African Individuals in Windhoek in September 2007.

On board two Nicholas soon found himself with opposite coloured bishops which made playing for a win difficult.

Johan on board three had an extra pawn but it was doubled and a draw was agreed after the position was repeated three times.

Calvin was the revelation of the round against Angola. After winning the opening battle he had to choose between a long term endgame win but our debutant decided that swashbuckling chess was the way and immediately launched a kingside attack with g4, h4 and of course f5!

Enjoy the games of round five.

The SA team beat Burundi 4 nil in a well spirited match. What I like about our new friends from Burundi is that they never give up and enjoy the games. At breakfast over eggs, viennas and baked beans (naturally!) we normally greet each other and chat about the previous rounds events. Language is a difficult as only their captain speaks English whereas the all they speak French and their native language Kirundi. (Quick trivial pursuit! Capital of Burundi) Read the end of the article to check!

Botswana and Mozambique had one of those epic battles where Mozambique tried valiantly to avenge their round one defeat. Botswana won comfortably with 3.1

Towards the end of the round the Mozambican organizer Pedro Chambule who is a very capable organizer informed me that all the chicken was up at Topilinos and we would have to eat at Mimmos in the mall. I reluctantly agreed! At dinner Johan, Calvin, Kgaugelo and Nicholas ordered pizzas whereas I went for the Hake and Calamari Combo. Lo and Behold do we see chicken appearing on David’s plate!! His defense albeit a bit weak was that he wanted to try the peri-peri flavour!

The first game to finish was Kgauegelo who won a piece very easily on move 22. Johan also went a piece up and finished off his opponent quickly. Calvin pressed hard and won the endgame after missing the simple win of a piece after Qd2+, Qe2 and then he should’ve gone Bishop takes e4! David played his customary long game although the result was never in doubt. The Burundi board one needs to be coached and I am sure he will be able to do well in Africa.

Round 7

This past Thursday we had a bye. So this led to the perennial question? Sight see or late lie in! After discussions it was decided ! The younger set led by Nicholas would sleep late! So Johan, David and I agreed to meet at 09h15 to meet to do some exploring.

We decided to catch a taxi to the Polana centre. After the compulsory haggling over taxi fare we embarked in a taxi towards the Polana centre and hotel. Upon arrival we explored the centre which was smaller than the Maputo centre which is next to the playing venue. We the strolled around and came across the curio sellers.

After buying a few curios we proceeded to the Polana Hotel which one can visit at $US200 per night. The brochure says that the five star Polana Serena Hotel is located on the Bay of Maputo and epitomizes the luxury and hospitality of time gone by. It is an experience characterised by the magical mix of Colonial charm and African appeal.

After taking a few photos David found a chess board in the grounds. He then treated Johan and myself to his last game against Burundi. I guess the Polana Serena didn’t see such high level chess analysis in their garden for a long time.

Upon our return we then proceeded to the playing hall where we noticed that our friends from Botswana were giving Angola a run for their money. The match ended 2.2 which we were happy with as this allowed us a 4 point lead. Burundi lost 4 nil to Mozambique.

Mozambique facts

22. I’ve seen more Pajeros in Mozambique than I’ve ever seen in South Africa! 23. Rands are accepted as a paying currency at all shops that we entered. 24. Mrs. Graca Mandela is the only lady in the world to have been married to two presidents of two different countries. 25. The gini co-efficient is quite stark in Mozambique. 26. The Cabora Bassa power station supplies power to South Africa.

Round 8

So the now the team was pleased. We proceeded in a happy mood to Topalinos for our daily chicken and meal! Today we caught everything fresh as we were not playing. Interestingly after loading your plate you are charged per weight for your lunch fare. The restaurant must be doing well as there was nearly no space for the six of us to sit.

We had decided to rest David. On Board one Nicholas had an off day and lost against Providence. Nick has promised to pick up his game as he has now scored 2 draws and a loss for his last three games two of which has been played on board one.

On board two Johan dropped 2 pawns and clawed his way back to a draw after Ignatius could not find the knockout blow. Phew!

On board three Calvin showed his sublime form by racking up his fifth win!he is the teams striker and SA has come to rely on the silent but deadly killer Cape Peninsula University of Technology student. Enjoy the day.

On board four Kgaugelo was disappointed with his draw.

So Botswana drew 2-2 with us which meant our lead decreased!

On our neighbouring boards Angola was not having it easy as they only won 2.5 to 1.5 against Mozambique.

This now means that we lead by 3.5 points going into the last two rounds. SA plays Mozambique in the morning and Angola is expected to get 4 points against Burundi.

Enjoy the games.

Mozambique and South Africa signed the Nkomati Accord in 1984.

Round 9

Today we started at nine am which was a bit of an early start as we had to accommodate the closing ceremony which will be held at 7pm. We are quietly confident due to the standings:

SA - 19.5 Angola - 16 Botswana - 16 Mozambique - 11.5 Burundi - 1

Angola played Burundi and obtained the maximum four points. They go into the last round with 20 points.

SA obtained three points which means Angola must score 3.5 to win. We will try to win as many board prizes in addition to our team prize.

On board one David played the French Defence. His opponent Viageiro who is a tough player created a protected passed pawn on the e file and was able to hold David to a draw.

On board two Nicholas essayed a move order which allowed him to catch his opponent after Nge7! The old f7 trick still has victims today.

On board three Calvin’s opponent had a neat intermezzo Nc5 which allowed the game to be a passive closed one. This ensured the draw and Calvin not earning the well deserved full house of 6/6.

On board four Kgauagelo employed the four pawns attack and brought the point home.

Enjoy the games.

Everything was now set. Angola has to beat SA 3.5 if they want the title. We decided to rest Calvin as he had done enough to secure the board prize. Kgauegelo, Johan and Nicholas were all still in with a chance for the board prize. In fact the head to head encounters with Angola on board two and three were fact for the respective board prizes.

Once all this was revealed we ventured forth to Topalinos. And then we saw her. All the South Africans started to smile. Yes on this fine Friday there was something we never thought we would see. It was (yes!) A boerewors rolletjie! We immediately proceeded to add this delightful dish to our chicken and chips!

Mozambique facts

32. The country has three lakes Lake Niassa, Lake Chiuta and Lake Shirwa all in the north. 33. The country is drained by five principal rivers and several smaller ones with the largest and most important the Zambezi. 34. The major cities are Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Tete, Quelimane, Chimoio, Pemba, Imhabane, Xai- Xai and Lichinga. 35. Mozambique has a tropical climate with two seasons. A wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September. 36. Average temperatures range in Maputo are from 13 to 24 Celsius in July to 31 degrees Celsius in February.

Round 10 - final I reminded the players before we started that today was Madiba’s birthday. We needed to win this event so that we as chess players in South Africa can honour Africa’s greatest son. Secure in the knowledge that we will now be doing battle for the Zone 4.3 honours we proceeded to the hall.

On board one David showed his experience when he proceeded to use his long international chess career to slow the game as was required. We only needed one point to secure victory so any two draws or one win would do for this captain! His final position deserves a diagram! He remarked that when a captain needs a draw he will oblige! For our younger audience who does not know International Master David Gluckman, I can vouch for the fact that he is an absolute gentleman and a supreme team player. He has played chess for SA since 1992 when he played against Argentina on the 7th of June at the 1992 Philippines Olympiad. At this stage I think only IM Kenny Solomon has more caps for South Africa.

On board two Nicholas was up against Catarino Domingos. Domingos is a friendly Angolan who speaks fluent English. We chatted on many occasions. He lost against Burundi which gave Burundi their first international point. Today he was a tough nut to crack and when Nicholas overlooked a pin it was over! Bd5 was a killer blow. We were now in danger as Angola had their first victory in the match. On board three Johan and Eduardo were levelling things out. Pieces and pawns were exchanged and although Johan had a time advantage the time increment allowed a draw to be the honourable result. The draw thus ensured that SA obtained their first Zone 4.3 title.

On board four a battle royal was raging. Kgaugelo was in a tight spot after the opening when he was unable to castle. He however sacrificed his queen for two rooks and was going for victory. As captain I indicated he could draw at any stage as victory was secured. He however went for gold and lost in the ensuing complications. Kgaugelo played well and made a good debut for SA. Calvin was the reserve for this round

For this intrepid reporter I thoroughly enjoyed the mission. Many new friends were made. This was also the first time a SA chess team has won a title on the continent of Africa. Well done guys. You have done SA proud. Fide Vice-President Lewis Ncube stands next to Mr. Pedro Chambule

To Mr. Pedro Chambule and the Mozambican Chess Federation, South Africa thanks you for all the hard work you have done in making this event possible. We enjoyed Maputo and your warm hospitality. To Mr. Eddie Price thank you for your insights and may we emulate your longevity in international chess!

Eddie and Alex the TD’s

On the final Friday the players were disappointed when Mr. Chambule informed us that we were going to a new restaurant. We reluctantly agreed to go the Escorpio. The Escorpio is a superb restaurant with superlative ambience and great food. Thanks Pedro. Second Place Angola

Third Place Botswana SA’s two Board winners Johan and Calvin

Long Live the Protea Chess players and the Champions of Zone 4.3! I christen them Amamovemove! The team dedicated their victory to Mr. Nelson Mandela who turned 90 on the day of our victory.
