2015 NGM FOOTBALL

Player/Parent Manual High School Football Team

Dear NGM Players and Parents,

Welcome to another year of NGM Football! I am excited about the potential that this team has and where we are headed. The program is taking steps forward every year and is ready to explode into a powerhouse. The sky is the limit for this year’s team, both on and off the field. We are continuing our Character Development program again this year. The opportunities for players through this program are the “High Impact Leaders” Leadership Class, Leadership Council, Character Lessons, and our service day for summer camp at “Wisconsin Badger Camp” for the developmentally disabled. This program helps players on the field, but more importantly off the field and for the rest of their lives. I have spent a lot of time this off season reevaluating our program in every aspect. I wanted to go through things and decide how we can improve our program. I first started by looking at our overall program’s philosophy, then looked at our offensive, defensive, and special teams philosophies. I understand there are a lot of different schemes and have decided that these are ours. We aren’t concerned with what other programs do for their schemes and philosophies. This is what I decided was best for our program and the direction we want to go forward. We need players, parents, and coaches to “buy in” to our philosophies and schemes for us to be successful. We are going to be talking a lot about being a Second-Goal Parent this season. I have included a description of being a Second-Goal Parent in this manual. Please read through it and try to follow it to help your son or daughter. Also, we will discuss about “Honoring the Game”. We honor the game by being positive and supportive of players, coaches, fans, officials, and opponents. I have included descriptions and tips for “Honoring the Game” in this manual as well. We expect parents, family members, and fans to honor the game during games. If a spectator is not honoring the game by their actions or words during a game, please remind them “At NGM we honor the game. Are you honoring the game right now?” Please remember when you are at games this year to honor the game and be a good role model for your athlete. While NGM has the goal of winning another Capitol South Conference Championship and then the Division 4 State Championship in 2015, we will still keep our number one program goal intact and that is the types of kids we produce. Remember, “We’ll know in twenty years if it was a successful season, based on the fact that the kids are responsible, upstanding, contributing members of society.” Last year’s season didn’t turn out exactly the way we had planned in a lot of areas including wins and losses. The changes we have made for this season and following seasons are to be proactive instead of reactive and to make this the best program in the state in every area. As we gear up for another great year of Knight football. . . Remember in 2015 we are looking for “REDEMPTION!”

Sincerely,

Home Game Expectations

For Varsity home games, it is expected that all players meet at the locker room by 5:00 p.m. In some cases, we may do a short run through prior to getting dressed, so punctuality is necessary. The bus will leave Monticello at 4:40 p.m. on game nights and all players must ride the bus to New Glarus and the van back to Monticello.

For Junior Varsity home games, it is expected that all players are in the locker room by 3:45 p.m. and are dressed and ready to go by 4:00 p.m. This will allow coaches to review last minute instructions.

For Freshman home games, it is expected that all players are in the locker room by 3:45 p.m. and are dressed and ready to go by 4:00 p.m. This will allow coaches to review last minute instructions. High School Football Team NGM TRANSPORTATION POLICY Summary Traveling to and from a football game is part of the team experience and it is expected that players are a part of that experience. From time to time, there may be reasons why a student would want to ride home with parents. These reasons include going to eat with relatives who have traveled to watch you play, planned vacations and you want to leave from the game, or even illness and injury. A reasonable expectation is that players may only not ride the bus home one time throughout the course of the season.

If you are going to miss, you MUST have the waiver that is included in this booklet filled out and it MUST be returned to the head coach one day in advance. Failure to follow this policy and/or policy abuse will result in a decrease in playing time. Monticello Bus Policy The bus to practice always leaves 30 minutes prior to the start of practice. Students from Monticello are required to ride the bus to and from practice. This includes nights of games and nights when team dinners are located in New Glarus. Failure to follow this rule will lead to the following consequences:

a) 1st offense – player will be removed from starting line-up or will be removed from the next game for a quarter. b) 2nd offense – player will be ineligible for the next contest. c) Repeated offenses may lead to dismissal from the team.

From time to time, there are reasons why players may need to drive (i.e. doctor’s appointments, college visits, family commitments). When these come up, it must be approved through Mr. Gustafson 1 day in advance of the day when the student will drive. If a player misses the bus, a signed note from the Monticello office can clear them to drive. High School Football Team Academic Study

We started the Academic Study program four years ago, because many first year players felt the strains of performing well in athletics and academics. This program is for all Freshman and non-Varsity sophomores where they can use the time immediately after school to work on their homework (it is not optional for non-Varsity Freshman).

Rules for Academic study 1. Students will be assigned seats in classroom 2. Students are expected to work on their assignments 3. Students can use computers for school use or HUDL only 4. Monticello students will report directly to Academic Study as soon as they get to New Glarus 5. Students are not allowed to roam the halls during Academic Study time 6. Violations in rules will result in extra conditioning for everyone

If all students are done with their assignments, they can watch HUDL.

Dates: Tuesday, September 15 Tuesday, September 22 Tuesday, September 29 Tuesday, October 6 Tuesday, October 13

The NGM Football Coaching Staff believes in helping players to become better individuals and help them become acclimated for their post-high school experiences. We view the athletic experience as an opportunity for athletes to take risks and to grow in stature. Parents are not allowed at practice because we feel this is a great opportunity for them to learn how to deal with adults. This is an important skill simply because in a very short time, these athletes will be dealing with professors and/or employers.

As a result of our beliefs, we refuse to engage in any discussion with parents about the program and making differing opinions unless: A. The player has talked to with his coordinator about their status on the team. At this time, the coaches will explain expectations and ideas that can help the athlete to succeed. B. A minimum of one practice week must pass before the issue is addressed again. This will allow time for the athlete to resolve the issue on their own. C. If there is still a concern, the athlete will approach the head coach to establish a meeting time with coaches, parents, and athlete to discuss the situation. D. Once this has been established, we will meet and hopefully resolve any differences. At this meeting, I will not engage in the following: a.i. Discussions about other players a.ii. Discussions about program philosophies a.iii. Discussions about practice or game decisions

If this procedure is broken, it will immediately be addressed with the athlete and the parents. Understand that unity is a goal for our team and that violations in procedures could lead to a change in playing time. In addition, I will not engage in any discussions without the player’s knowledge. If unity is our goal, then conversations behind the back of players is not conducive to this environment. In addition, emails that are addressing concerns will not be read and will be forwarded back to the sender. High School Football Team

Technology Rules

To stay current in today’s world and to promote team unity;

If a player, parent, or family member makes negative comments on social media such as; Facebook, Twitter, Wissports, Instagram, etc about 1. the team, 2. the performance of other players, or 3. coaches it could lead to a change in playing time and/or post season awards.

We are also asking all players to sign the “Student-Athlete Social Media Agreement”.

Cell phones and internet devices are requested to not be used at any team events.

We view this as team time and we want to use it to unite & build the team. If players are on their phones or on the internet they are not making connections with teammates or concentrating on what they need to do before games. This will be discussed further with Leadership Council. (The one exception would be to look at HUDL.) Mission: Our goal is to provide a program, based on proven strength and conditioning principles to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. We want to Build a Better Athlete.

Motto: “To become a champion, you must first train like a champion.”

Philosophy: We expect our athletes to train with great intensity, follow the training program provided to them, and to know at all times they have outworked and are better prepared than their opponents.

New Glarus – Monticello Strength and Conditioning Program promotes proper nutrition and discourages the use of dietary supplements and energy drinks. It also bans the use of performance enhancing substances. We want our athletes to learn proper nutrition habits that they will use for life, not just while they are playing for us. There are nutrition packets and meal plans available to any and all athletes. i.ii. Nutrition Packets are available for all athletes V. Injury Prevention a. The programs are specifically designed to promote injury prevention by pre- habilitating the student-athlete. An emphasis is placed on training areas that are prone to injuries. While all injuries cannot be stopped, the New Glarus – Monticello Strength and Conditioning program can decrease the likelihood of injury. VI. Testing a. We do an estimated one rep max on lift tests. We have the athlete choose a weight they can do 3 – 6 times and then we figure out what their estimated one rep max would be. The NGM Strength and Conditioning program never allows a one rep max, because of the possibilities for injury and stunting of growth plates. We test bench press, squat, hang clean, 40 yard dash, vertical jump, and pro agility. We are adding a flexibility test and more than likely a body composition test. VII. Belts & Straps a. In our program weight lifting belts are only allowed for maximal or near maximal lifts (85% of max or more). a.i. We do this, because wearing a weight belt too often reduces opportunities for the abdominal muscles to be trained. a.ii. This makes the athlete‘s core weaker and is counterproductive to our workouts. b. Weight lifting straps are not allowed for any lifts. b.i. “As soon as our opponents start sewing straps onto their uniforms we will use straps in our training program. Until then we will develop tremendous grip strength by performing all of our training without the use of straps.”- Allen Hedrick, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo VIII. Benefits of Lifting a. Injury prevention b. Improvement in all athletics c. Athletes are bigger, faster, and stronger d. Rehabilitation from past injuries e. Helps to teach commitment and dedication f. More awake for early classes g. Improves overall academic performance IX. Athletes Keys to Success a. Willingness to participate in our off-season program b. Willingness to perform every portion of our program c. Willingness to commit to the program; make it a routine d. Find the reason to be there, not the excuse to not be there! X. Parent’s Role in the Weight Room a. Help motivate the athlete a.i. Encourage the athlete to be part of the program a.ii. Buy in to the program & benefits as well a.iii. Supply reasons & reminders for athletes to lift b. Help facilitate the lifting schedule b.i. Providing rides b.ii. Be the alarm clock b.iii.
