Dear Applicant

Thank you for your interest in the position advertised. The following information should give you a flavour of our school. However, we warmly encourage you to visit in person if possible.

General School Information Number on Roll: Currently 390 in years R – Y6. The school is a two-form entry school situated on the fringe of the city of Bradford in the village of Heaton. We are a Voluntary Aided Church of England school with a strong Christian ethos. We have close links with our Parish Church of St. Barnabas’. Parents of children of other faiths apply for places at the school as they recognise and value the emphasis on spiritual and moral development, which is a particularly strong feature of our school.

The school serves an area of mixed housing and the children come from a range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. The majority of children in school are of Asian heritage. These children are mostly of Pakistani heritage, though we also have a small number of families from Indian, Bangladeshi and Eastern European heritage. The majority of children from Asian backgrounds speak English as an additional language. The percentage of ethnic minority children in school has increased rapidly over the last five to six years due to the changing population of the immediate area which the school serves. This has presented us with new challenges and opportunities to work closely with parents to continue to raise achievement. There is quite a lot of mobility in the area and children do move between schools in the local area from time to time.

Staffing Structure We currently have a leadership structure which consists of Head, 1 deputy, and 3 Assistant Head Teachers. However, a new proposed leadership structure is under consultation for implementation from September 14. This includes Head, 2 Deputies and 3 TLRs. 1 deputy will have overall responsibility for Foundation state and key stage one and one deputy will have overall responsibility for key stage 2. The 3 TLR posts will be for SENCO, Maths leader and English leader. We have a teaching staff of 16.2 teachers plus the Head Teacher to cover 14 classes. This should increase in September 14 with the addition of 2 full-time teachers to support vulnerable groups and

individuals. We have a large support staff, including two HLTAs who provide a high level of support and cover for teaching staff CPD. The school has recently begun to employ cover supervisors in some year groups.

This allows us to:

 Provide cover for regular PPA time  Free teachers from time to time to attend CPD and participate in review and evaluation of school priorities  Provide some specialist teaching in PE  Provide some small group teaching where appropriate

Class teachers have a block of time for PPA with the teacher from the parallel class.

Ethos and Vision We have strong links with our Parish Church and have one act of worship in Church each month. Volunteers from the church support in some classrooms from time to time.

We became the first Fair Trade school in Bradford and the first school in Bradford to achieve the Leading Parent Partnership Award. We achieved the Investors in Pupils award in 2010.

Our Vision is that our school should be an exciting, fun and friendly place where everyone is safe, valued and encouraged to achieve their best and where God helps us in all we do.

We aim to continue to broaden opportunities and experiences for our children and have fun whilst achieving the highest possible standards

We provide a number of classes for parents to enable them to support their children’s learning and improve their own personal skills.

We are a member of the Bradford SHINE partnership which is a very proactive group of 12 local schools. As a partnership we are working closely together to provide greater opportunities for children and staff in all our schools.

Curriculum In addition to the statutory curriculum we offer a large range of extra-curricular activities including music lessons/activities, sports, arts and ICT. We also teach French and Spanish from Year 3 within the school day.

Where possible curriculum subjects are taught through topics or themes and knowledge and skills from core subjects is taught and consolidated and applied through cross-curricular topics and themes wherever possible.

Achievement and attainment in school are improving rapidly. Outcomes at F/KS1 are now close to, or above the national average in most areas. At the end of KS2 attainment shows a 3 year rising trend and attainment in each cohort within KS2 is rising. Despite high numbers of EAL children our children generally attain well in English. Attainment in maths tests has been an issue for several years though the gap between teacher assessment and test results is closing. We are currently implementing a number of strategies to improve achievement further, particularly in maths, and are confident that the impact of these strategies will be reflected in improved maths test results over the next few years.

Having read the above summary of what we are about I hope you are now inspired to visit and to see for yourself. Please contact school to arrange a suitable appointment.

Rewarding Performance Governors have approved a pay policy to implement performance related pay from September 2014. The school’s pay policy makes provision to reward teachers through accelerating pay progression for excellent performance subject to the relevant criteria being met. Pay progression from Sept 2014 will be subject to teachers being able to demonstrate that they are consistently meeting criteria for the next pay band on the school’s Professional Skills Matrix.
