ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNITY AFFAIRS

Intercultural Community Center and the Center for Gender Equity

SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS

The Assistant Director for Intercultural Community Affairs is an essential member of the Office of Intercultural Affairs with several wide-ranging administrative, supervisory, and instructional responsibilities, which inform and promote gender and cultural diversity. The Assistant Director performs other duties required to carry out the mission of Intercultural Affairs as identified and articulated by the Chief Diversity Officer and the College. These may include, but are not limited to representing the College and Intercultural Affairs regarding diversity initiatives, assessment, retention efforts, as well as maintaining an expertise in diversity theory, diversity programming, and establishing working relationships with other members of the campus community. The Assistant Director develops, implements, and administers campus wide programs and is responsible for the mentoring, supervision, and diversity leadership training of students. The Assistant Director will carry out a longstanding support and outreach relationships with campus cultural clubs, the Center for Gender Equity and First Generation students. The Assistant Director establishes an annual agenda, sets goals, outlining how programming realizes established goals, and assesses progress in meeting goals. These activities are carried out in consultation with and under the supervision of the Chief Diversity Officer. The Assistant Director plans, coordinates and implements diversity and equity programs for the campus community and provides guidance and training to appropriate student groups and departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned.

 Develops and implements campus-wide diversity training that enhance an appreciation for and understanding of gender and cultural differences, including but not limited to Safe Space Zone training, Ally and Advocate training and Upstander Bystander training.  Assist in monitoring operations and functions of the Intercultural Affairs including facilities, staff, program and budget management.  Develops programs, strategies and resources to foster the retention and academic achievement of underrepresented student populations.  Manage the Center for Gender Equity (CGE) including supervision of students and development of programs.  Support, instruct and lead underrepresented and marginalized student populations.  Develop and implement programs and events in response to the campus climate.  Maintain working relationships with academic, student affairs, and administrative departments in providing opportunities for students and student groups.  Serve on campus committees.  Coordinate the selection processes, personal and professional development, training, and supervision of the student program assistants.  Regularly confer with Chief Diversity Officer to develop and to implement effective workshops and trainings to address diversity and inclusion.  Assist in providing diversity training for the New and Transfer student orientations.  Conduct annual assessment for Intercultural Affairs.  Staff the RA’s and plan the co-curricular activities for the Multicultural Summer Institute (MSI) and coordinate follow-up programs throughout the academic year.  Assist with programming focused on career development and high impact practices for underrepresented students.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Three to five years of professional experience, preferably with student affairs.  Must have general knowledge of computer programs and budgetary skills.  Advising and program planning experience is required.  Strong interpersonal skills and supervisory experience are required.  Ability to handle multiple projects is required.  Ability to make sound ethical decisions, and experience with a diverse student body is preferred.  Experience with counseling and diversity training is preferred. Skills and Abilities:  Experience in co-curricular diversity programming, mentoring and teaching.

 Ability to generating campus-wide involvement among students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents and community members.  Knowledge of Diversity and Leadership training and development.

 An understanding of student development theories, in particular racial, sexual and gender identity theories.  Understanding and appreciation of key issues confronting first generation college students.  A high degree of emotional intelligence, charisma, communication skills and ability to maintain a pleasant demeanor while under pressure in a variety of situations.  A collaborative style and ability to accomplish goals through working with a variety of constituents and adeptly manage situations of conflict in a constructive, positive and non-confrontational manner.  Self-motivated, able to alternate easily between working independently and in a team.  Analytical skills to review assessment data and guide programs based on data analysis.
