1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE MAMIE JONES BANKS OF 12 MCCORMICK COUNTY UPON THE OCCASION OF HER 13 RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HER FOR HER FORTYNINE 14 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS AN EDUCATOR, AND 15 TO WISH HER MUCH HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN 16 ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS. 17 18 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina Senate 19 honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to the 20 welfare of this great state’s most important legacy, its children; 21 and 22 23 Whereas, Mamie Jones Banks of McCormick County, retiring after 24 fortynine fruitful years in the field of education, stands among 25 their number as an outstanding public benefactor, one much 26 admired in her role as both teacher and administrator; and 27 28 Whereas, Mamie received her teacher training at South Carolina 29 State University, graduating in the Class of 1964; and 30 31 Whereas, fortynine years ago, an eager firstyear teacher, she began 32 her work as an educator with the McCormick County School 33 District and dedicated the rest of her career to that district; and 34 35 Whereas, having worked as a teacher for twentyseven years, this 36 Mt. Carmel native was named assistant principal of McCormick 37 Middle School, becoming the first female school administrator in 38 McCormick and serving in that capacity for twelve years; and 39 40 Whereas, long acknowledged as a master teacher, Mamie has 41 mentored numerous teachers over the years, some of whom have 42 been her own former students; and

[801] 1 1 2 Whereas, for the past ten years, she has served as director of adult 3 education for McCormick County. Now, having touched thousands 4 of students during her nearly five decades in education, Mamie 5 Jones Banks will conclude an honored career in public school 6 education; and 7 8 Whereas, an avid fundraiser for the scholarships her sorority, 9 Alpha Kappa Alpha, awards to students in Abbeville, Greenwood, 10 and McCormick counties, Mamie established a scholarship in 2003 11 to benefit two to three McCormick High School students every 12 year; and 13 14 Whereas, at home, this wife of fortynine years is the mother of five 15 and grandmother of seven; and 16 17 Whereas, having set the bar of achievement high in her profession, 18 Mamie Jones Banks will be remembered upon her retirement with 19 affection and gratitude by colleagues, students, parents, and 20 legislative friends for years to come. Now, therefore, 21 22 Be it resolved by the Senate: 23 24 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 25 congratulate Mamie Jones Banks of McCormick County upon the 26 occasion of her retirement, commend her for her fortynine years of 27 dedicated service as an educator, and wish her much happiness and 28 fulfillment in all her future endeavors. 29 30 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 31 Mamie Jones Banks. 32 XX 33
