Multicultural Book Report

Multicultural Book Report Due Monday, May 9

There are 2 parts to your multicultural book report, an artistic part and a written part.

1. Quilt Square: You will be making a quilt square that represents your book. I will provide you with the paper (8.5” x 8.5”) for your final copy. You will need to think about things that represent your book. Your artifacts can be related to characters, plot, theme, connections you made, reactions you had to the story, or any other thoughts you have that are related to the book you read.

a. Step One: You will need to design a border for your quilt square. Choose one artifact and draw it repeatedly around the outside edge of your quilt square. In the Flush example the border was the green flash. Your border should be in color.

b. Step Two: Illustrate three other artifacts that represent your book in the body of your quilt square. You will need to color them. In the Flush example the four artifacts were: a small bottle of fuchsia food coloring, the Coral Queen, a jail cell, and the border of the green flash.

2. Written: On a separate piece of paper you will need to write responses to the prompts below. a. What are the unique cultural elements of your book? Tell about the cultural information you learned from the story. Think about the characters, their background, families, beliefs, customs, food, music, and any other aspect of culture that resonated with you. b. Explain why you chose this book in 3-5 sentences. c. Explain why you think the author wrote this book. How is it connected to the author’s life? You may wish to visit the author’s website for more background information. d. Make a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting you with one of the characters in the book. You should have at least three similarities and at least three differences. e. Explain what your 4 artifacts are and why they represent the story.
