BOSTON MEDICAL CENTER GENERAL SURGERY RESIDENCY PROGRAM
MOONLIGHTING POLICY
Boston Medical Center does not encourage moonlighting, defined as clinical services provided outside of the required assignments of the training program. A Graduate Medical Education program may permit moonlighting provided that the program’s policy on moonlighting must include the following requirements:
1. Residents and fellows must not be required to engage in moonlighting.
2. Only residents and fellows with a full license to practice medicine can moonlight.
3. A resident or fellow on a J-1 or H-1B visa is not allowed to moonlight even if fully- licensed, per conditions of the visa.
4. The resident or fellow must contact the GME office for aq moonlighting malpractice insurance addendum. The addendum must list the institutions hiring the resident or fellow and the number of hours per week or month that the resident or fellow will be expected to provide services. The resident or fellow shall not start moonlighting until the insurance addendum is approved.
5. The program director must sign the moonlighting addendum.
6. Moonlighting that occurs within the residency program and/or the sponsoring institution or the non-hospital sponsor’s primary clinical site(s), ie. internal moonlighting, must be counted toward the 80-hour weekly limit on duty hours.
7. The completed addendum must be returned to the GME office before the resident or fellow’s malpractice face sheet will be sent to the resident or fellow. The addendum is then sent via fax to the malpractice carrier.
8. The moonlighting addendum is placed in the resident or fellow’s file in the GME office and a copy is placed in the resident or fellow’s program file.
9. The institution at which the resident or fellow is moonlighting must submit the number of hours for each BMC resident or fellow to the program director.
10. The resident or fellow is credentialed by the appropriate institutions. In order to moonlight within BMC (internal moonlighting), the resident or fellow must be properly credentialed and follow hospital policies and procedures, as well as the bylaws and rules and regulations of the medical-dental staff.
