JOB DESCRIPTION McMaster Social PART-TIME Sciences Society Position Title: Chief Returning Officer

Term of Office: May 1st – April 30th

Supervisor: Vice-President Administration

Remuneration: Honorarium - $200.00 per Election (not including Acclimation)

Hours of Work: 10 Hours per week during Election Periods

General Scope of Duties The Chief Returning Officer (CRO) shall be the chief electoral office of the McMaster Social Sciences Society (MSSS), hired for a period set out by the VP Administration and ratified by the MSSS. The CRO shall not be a voting member of the MSSS, and shall not seek office in an election, support any candidate, or endorse a position in a referendum administered by the MSSS during her/her term of office.

The CRO shall report to the VP Administration, the procedure and timetable before each election/referendum, and the results of each electoral period, be responsible for the submission and administration of the electoral budget, and be responsible for consulting the VP Administration if clarification is needed for job duties, approved by the MSSS executive board.

The CRO shall also manage all other aspects of elections including:

- Poll Clerking - Referenda - Proclamation - Nominations - Eligibility - Notice of Poll - Withdrawal of Candidate - Ballots - Ballot Boxes - Campaigning - Procedure at the Poll - Poll Closing - Ballot Box Storage - Time limits - Counting - Tie Vote

Major Duties and Responsibilities Category Percent Specifics Election Management 70%  Supervising and delegating all aspects of MSSS elections as seen above.  Ensuring all rules and regulations of Elections are upheld Election Promotion 15%  Promoting the occurrences of specific MSSS Elections

MSSS Interaction 15%  Attending meetings and giving updates on all current initiatives.  Reporting any problems/issues the VP Adminsitration

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  Organizational and time management skills required  Previous experience working in elections and is an asset  Strong interpersonal skills is a must

Working Conditions  Time demands may exceed stated hours of work
