STUDENT OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to :

 demonstrate by means of receptive and expressive assessments a beginning conversational level of fluency in

o American Sign Language

o Fingerspelling

o Knowledge about ASL and about Deaf Culture

STUDENT OUTCOMES - Upon successful completion of this course, the student will…

A. Have a knowledge of fingerspelling and numbers & their appropriate uses.

B. Have a knowledge of the parameters of a sign and utilize them in reproducing the handshapes & facial expressions with a degree of fluency.

C. Have a basic understanding of the spatial aspect of ASL as well as classifiers.

D. Understand the ASL of native or fluent signers on very specific topics & in very specific situations.

E. Understand basic cultural diversity among members of the U.S. Deaf Community & others with a measurable hearing loss.

STUDENT OUTCOMES - Upon successful completion of course, the student will:

A. Demonstrate a greater understanding of fingerspelling and numbers and their uses within ASL; be able to express and receive both.

B. Reproduce the handshapes, signs, classifiers and facial expressions with greater ease and increasing fluency and creativity.

C. Transcribe relevant information of a signed utterance in order to accurately reproduce and translate it into English.

D. Identify specific cultural, historical and geographical points of interest to the Deaf Community.

E. Understand with increasing ease the ASL of fluent and native speakers. Comprehend the ASL of native and fluent signers about everyday cultural topics.

STUDENT OUTCOMES - Upon successful course completion, students will be able to:

a. Express and receive ideas in fingerspelling at a rate of 80 to 90 letters per minute.

b. Identify distractions related to receptive work with fingerspelling and learn ways to address them.

c. Identify areas in need of improvement and learn ways to address those needs.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Reproduce the handshapes , classifiers and facial expressions in patterns particular to ASL in increasingly complex detailed sentences and discourses.

B. Associate transcribed forms with signed ASL to realize the need and important of directionality cues (etc) and be able to develop original pieces using the rules of syntax particular to ASL.

C. Receive a discourse in ASL on increasingly advanced levels and recognize cognates and constructions particular to ASL, specifically aspect and duration.

D. Demonstrate ability to communicate in ASL in a manner acceptable in any part of the deaf community in the U.S .

E. Demonstrate knowledge of deaf culture and some of the historical incidents of deaf history in the U.S. and of the historical develop of ASL, in part through videotaped selections designed to challenge the student with new vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as reinforce those already learned.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

A. Expand the ability to reproduce accurately handshapes, classifiers , aspect markers, use of space movement and facial expressions in patterns particular to ASL in increasingly complex sentences.

B. Communicate at an intermediate-advanced level in ASL using expressions relating to various general conversation topics, e.g., church/religion, business, leisure time, animals, court, deaf functions, hobbies, health, home life, food, sports.

C. Develop original creative pieces using the rules of syntax particular to ASL, e.g., classifiers and listing as well as the more subjective aspects of ASL.

D. Understand the sign-to-voice process, using transcribing as an intermediary stage.

E. Have a basic understanding of what interpreting is, how that skill differs from that of fluency in a language, respect the need for confidentiality in the Deaf Community.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

A. Demonstrate knowledge of the educational, social, and political history of the American deaf community, especially interactions been hearing parents and a deaf child, a hearing child and deaf parents, deaf parents and a deaf child, deaf child and peers, deaf adult and hearing adults.

B. Demonstrate knowledge of culture, language (including ASL, Pidgin Signed English & various signed codes for English) and diversity issues within the American D/deaf community and be able to apply these to the American deaf community.

C. Demonstrate knowledge of biases people often have towards deafness and deaf people.

D. Conduct research and demonstrate implication of an oral-only vs. a total Communication approach to the education of the deaf.

E. Demonstrate knowledge of ASL
