AnalyzingAnalyzing ArchetypesArchetypes inin FairyFairy TalesTales

OVERVIEW To further our study of archetypes, you will work in a small group to identify and analyze various archetypes in a fairy tale. After completing all of the following steps, your group will then create a multimedia lesson which you will present to the class.

YOUR INITIAL TASK 1. With your group, read and annotate your assigned fairy tale. 2. After your initial reading of your designated story, reread it. During the second reading of the text, identify and thoroughly analyze all archetypal people and places within it. 3. Identify the hero or heroine in your fairy tale. Single out and explain all elements of the story that adhere to the stages of the “hero’s journey.” 4. Create a thorough plot summary of the story. Be sure to include all major characters and details. 5. Research the “Disney Version” of your fairy tale. Investigate online sources or plan a time to get together and watch the movie. Then, make a detailed list comparing and contrasting the textual version of the fairy tale to the “Disney Version” of the fairy tale. Be sure to compare and contrast the plot as well as the characters and archetypes in the text and film. 6. Research the background to your fairy tale. Include all the information as specified on page two of this packet. 7. Rewrite your fairy tale with creative twists. You may choose to reverse some of the characters roles, add more humorous aspects to it, change the ending, etc. Your “new and improved” fairy tale must include at least five archetypal people and three archetypal places. You must have an obvious hero or heroine in your story and are expected to include at least five of the ten stages that are part of the “hero’s journey.”

YOUR PRESENTATION The purpose of your presentation is to present your group’s findings to the class to teach them what you learned. All presentations must include the following: 1. The names of each group member and the parts of the project for which each person was responsible. 2. Your group’s summary of the fairy tale’s plot. 3. A detailed list and explanation of the various archetypes in your fairy tale. 4. The name of the hero or heroine in your fairy tale with an explanation of how and why he or she functions as the courageous protagonist. 5. An account of the elements and phases of your hero or heroine’s journey.

-1- 6. Your research over the fairy tale as detailed on page two of this packet. 7. At least five similarities and five differences between the “Disney Version” of your fairy tale and the original version of your fairy tale. 8. Your “new and improved” fairy tale as described above. 9. One copy of a ten-question quiz based on the information in your presentation. I will compile all the quizzes from the class and include questions from each assessment on our unit exam. CREATIVE LISCENE At this point in the year, I am beyond confident that my sophomores possess a plethora of diverse and unique creative abilities. Accordingly, I expect to see the following in each presentation: 1. At minimum of ten visual representations from your fairy tale. You may choose to have a group member create these representations or you may find them online, etc. These images should be incorporated into your presentation. 2. Innovation. Compile your final presentation in a PowerPoint Slideshow, make a video (who knows, your group may be the next YouTube sensation!?!), make a threefold poster, create a picture book, mix and match any of the previous options, devise your own awe-inspiring method of presenting to the class, etc. The bottom line is this: I DO NOT want to be handed a dull pile of papers. Be colorful, creative, and entertaining.

GRADING INFORMATION Your group’s project will count as one exam grade. Consequently, I expect your highest quality work. Each group member will receive the same grade on the project. However, each student will also be responsible for evaluating himself or herself as well as privately submitting an evaluation of each group member’s level of participation in the project. I will use students’ evaluations as well as my own observations to give each group member a “participation grade” for the project; this grade will count as a separate, individual test grade.

*Please see the rubric on the last page of this packet for additional, more detailed grading information.

RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS You must include all of the following information in your presentation:

 The full title and the author(s) of your fairy tale  The original date of publication for your fairy tale  The origins of the story (for example, were the authors inspired to write the fairy tale because of their personal experiences, etc.?)  A list of all television, movie, or textual versions or adaptations of your fairy tale  A list of popular culture references to your fairy tale  A list of the cultures in which your fairy tale has been adapted (for example, is there an Asian version of the story, etc.) Be sure to include a works cited page that credits all sources you used to find the necessary information. Don’t forget to utilize http://www.easybib.com/; this is a great resource to help guide you when creating a works cited page. Do not forget to organize the final draft of your works cited page in alphabetical order. Double space your entries and only indent the first line of each source. -2- AA ProjectProject GuideGuide
