As we did not have a guest speaker President Scott called on Jay Clowes and Peter Lindsay to tell us a little about themselves.

Jay was first and told us about his recent adventures in the ‘Corporate Challenge’ around the world. The idea, from what I could work out, was that each member of the Challenge is fitted with a pedometer and the distance they walk over a period is converted to kilometers and track around the world. Jay teamed up with Fiona and while they did not win they made a good account of themselves and enjoyed the experience as well as covering many kilometers on foot. As to his life story, Jay lived in Sydney until he and his family moved to Coffs in December 2005. He pointed out that as is the case with a few of us he is not yet a local. He sort employment with several law firms in Coffs and eventually ended up with Fishburn, Watson & O’Brien where he is now a partner. He agrees, as do all of us, that Coffs is a great place to live and bring up a family. The major benefit is the ease of getting around the area and the facilities available to everyone.

Peter Lindsay followed up and told us that he was born in Swan Hill. He studied in Melbourne before moving to Perth where he met Kath, his wife. Kath was originally from Cairns. He again studied to be a Physical Education Teacher, a role he never worked in. In his own words he ‘fell on his feet’ at this time and had several positions in the welfare field in Perth and northern WA as well as Darwin. Over this period he and Kath had two daughters. Peter also told us of some of his experiences as a leader in some youth and adult rehabilitation programs .He has recently completed a Masters degree in Psychology and is busy, with Kath, in establishing a practice in Coffs Harbour. President Scott thanked both Jay and Peter for relating their stories.

I have added this information for the benefit of new, and old, members.

Membership Development RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROPOSER 1. You are responsible for introducing your guest to other club members. 2. Inform them of the correct attire for meetings. 3. Explain the format of meetings 4. Give them some idea of the type of projects your club has and is presently undertaking. 5. Include them in any discussions with members during meetings. 6. Let them know that our club has regular ladies nights and that we often have projects where we encourage partners and family to be involved. 7. Answer any questions regarding Rotary honestly and if you don't know the answer endeavour to find out for them. 8. Be proactive with your guests and follow up with them after each meeting and be sure to remind them during the day before the next. 9. NEVER refer to your guest as a PROSPECTIVE MEMBER before their membership application has been submitted and approved by the Board, as until then, their application for membership may not be approved for various reasons and elevates any embarrassment caused by an unsuccessful application.

Don’t forget this important requirement – Working With Children.

All information and the application regarding the New Working with Children Check can be found on our District Youth Web site at: http://www.rotaryyouthexchange9650.com.au/downloads/working-with- children-check.html This only takes a few minutes and it is not hard. The questions they ask are about you so you should know the answers.

Future Guest speakers may be:

Rachel Richardson – Spending Time in Nature Phil & Elise Crofts

SERGEANTS SESSION

Ian McAllister, assisted by Geoff Knight, took to the floor for the fine session and as usual did a great job. There must have been a few who felt guilty and several members left at this point. I note that Jay did leave some money with Ian, just in case.

Well done Ian and Geoff.
