Directions for Creating Letters Home 1. Follow these guidelines. a. Your letter home should be written from the perspective of someone involved in a westward movement (i.e. Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, Gold Rush, etc.) and in the present tense – as if you were there. b. Your letter should be dated. c. It should attempt to accurately describe the scenes around you on your journey and what they encountered when you got there. d. It should be approximately ½ sheet of paper in length or approximately 75 words in length. 2. We will spend part of 4 class periods working on the letters. I will be taking a class assignment grade on the completed letters on the fourth day. Do not lose your letters as you will need them to complete your project. The complete project is due Feb. 23rd . Project Directions Use the letters home completed in class to create a book of letters. You should include 4 letters you wrote in class and 1 on your own outside of class. You will be graded on the following criteria

 Each letter must be ½ page in length or approximately 75 words in length.  Each letter must be dated correctly and in chronological order.  Historically accurate.  Spelling, capitalization and/or grammatical errors do not distract the readability to Mrs. Martin.  Includes a hand drawn map of your trip west that is hand labeled with the following: Oregon Territory, Louisiana Territory, Mississippi R., Missouri R., Snake R., Platte R., Rocky Mountains, Pacific Ocean, Pike’s Peak, St. Louis.  Letters should be antiqued, on unlined paper, have separate cover, cover constructed of a different material or texture, creative binding

Hand drawn and hand labeled is defined by this teacher as having been completed without the use of electronic means.
