Biblical Principles "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind " This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself " All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments (Matthew 22:37-40 NIV). As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children (I Thessalonians 2:6-7 NIV).

In a world that is filled with evil, fear, and hate, how do we as Christians respond? As we enter the twenty-first century, we can look back to a time when Christians responded in a dynamic way to desperate social and spiritual conditions. The Good Samaritan call was ______.

People were responding not just in preaching and teaching but in going to the bowels of the city, loving the unlovely and bringing the ______in ______and ______to the alcoholic, the prostitute, the broken and the forgotten.

First a stream, then a river; hundreds of people from ______walks of life became part of a great movement of God committed to changing the ______of the ______. The movement became known as the rescue mission movement. From a small beginning it has grown to a movement that today is in almost every city of size in America, with a companion city mission movement in many of the great cities of the world.

Throughout history rescue missions have been founded and operated by unlikely people. Jerry McAuley was a converted alcoholic ex-con. with little education. Some founders were socialites and pastors, some were society's misfits, and, to the surprise of even many in the movement today, many were women.

In some cases these women were the unsung heroes, working with their husbands who got much of the credit and fame. But more than that, these women were the ______of this great movement. Steve Burger, Executive Director AGRM formerly the IUGM CHAPTER 1 - Overcome Evil With Good

Biblical Principle Love must he sincere. Hate what is evil: cling to what is good ...D not he overcome by evil but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:9,21 NIV).

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us ... let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and truth (I John 3:16, 18 NIV).

Summary Statement In every century there is a struggle between good and evil, between God and the Devil! We cannot understand evil without understanding sin (Page 21).

What should we cling to? Is there more or less evil in the world today?

1. Fill in these blanks. Page 21 [David] Often did I try to improve conduct; but as often did I find that, as the leopard cannot its spots, no more can they who have been accustomed to do evil learn to do ______. By continuing to ______the Scriptures, I found One, even ______, who could deliver not only from the punishment, but from the ______of sin. Page 23 Few matches have been more equal, and seldom has more depended on such equality... She [Frances] was truly a helpmate to her husband, with a heart as ______and a zeal as ardent as ______had himself Her Christian virtue and ______courage did not fail.

Biblical Principle I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord (Psalm 40:1 KJV).

Summary Statement [Maria and Jerry] were rescued, and they established the first rescue mission founded by individuals who had been lifted up out of the miry clay (Page36).

Who can bring us up out of a "horrible pit?" Are there some people God cannot change?

1. Fill in these blanks. Page 52 [Maria] I was once a poor homeless drunkard. I had no God and no hope, no home and no friends; and I ______unto God and He ______my prayer, and He put hope into my life. Page 38 [Jerry] I'd been in prison five years ... 3. Write or tell. Compare Jerry's ups and downs to Maria's steady path of heart and life change. CHAPTER 3 - Perfect Love Drives Out Fear

Biblical Principle God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:16-18 NIV).

Summery Statement Wealthy non-Christians are often generous to rescue ministries to the poor. For a few, when they meet the poor face-to-face, they meet the Savior in a powerful way (Page 60).

How is love made complete? What is perfect love?

1. Fill in these blanks. Biblical Principles Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NIV A light shining in a dark place (2 Peter 1:19 NIV). The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised (Luke 4-18 KJV). For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was in prison and you came to visit me (Matthew 25:35-36 NIV). Summery Statement God often calls leaders when they are young. Others see their good deeds and their light shines. However, sometimes they cause controversy (Page 83).

Why should we let our light shine? What are good deeds?

1. Fill in these blanks. Page 76 She was a ______girl whose heart for the ______went far beyond New York. She became a national leader in ______ministry. All over this world this gospel is hearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all it's truth (Colossians 1:3-4 NIV).

Key Statements Eva lived in an evil time and yet was rescued, and she rescued and inspired others. The few women who joined her lived together, and they gave their money away, learning to live by faith, following Jesus (Page 99).

Key Statement God knows the change of governments, boundaries, countries and economies. In His great love He sees the needs of the poor and provides great, godly leaders. He is now preparing and calling many to do rescue work in new locations (Page 104).

Why does it seem at times that God has forgotten the poor?

Biblical Principles: An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs - how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world - how he can please his wife - and his interests are divided. An unmarried women ... is concerned about the Lord's affair: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord ... But a married women is concerned with the things of this world - how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:32-35 NIV). Biblical Principle She kept on praying to the Lord (I Samuel 1:12 NIV).

Biblical Principle When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36 NIV).

Summery Statement There is an acute need for volunteers who can give that extra measure of love, and who can mother and mentor today's "outcast." ... The number of volunteers must grow if we are going to see the results we desire The compassion we show today as we volunteer will bear fruit for years to come (Page 118).

Why did Jesus have compassion on the crowds?

Summery Statement She denied self, gave up her comfortable lifestyle, and started to follow Jesus to the most hurting people. Satan was on the run. The same light that shone in their home in the mission -- those old halls of prostitution -- still shines on the streets today where the power of God's love still draws the Christian worker to the sinner waiting to be rescued (Page 133).

How do we deny ourselves?

In what ways does denying yourself go against modem thought?
