Good News SULTAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Sultan Elementary has been undergoing a major technology upgrade. Every classroom has received computers that were donated by Group Health. We are looking forward to improving teacher accessibility through email and also for increased utilization of technology as a classroom instructional tool. Dave Moon, Doug Irwin, and Dave Hockenson deserve extra credit for all of their efforts in making the roll out smooth and seamless and very timely. They really worked hard in listening to what teachers wanted and provided what they could.

GOLD BAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Excel- This year’s Excel students are published on the World Wide Web. At this point each student has two examples of his/her writing and art published. Visit by going through the Gold Bar website or http://riverrun.yi.org/excel. WASL Results- our students exceeded our writing goals set for 2003. Our Learning Improvement Plans will continue to focus on reading, writing and math with special emphasis in areas below the state average. Parent Conferences were well attended. Both parents and teachers reported that the sharing was valuable and informative. Three engineers visited from Kenworth Trucks. Students toured a truck that is configured to run fuel economy tests and were encouraged to learn to read in order to read the truck operating manuals that they showed them.

SULTAN MIDDLE SCHOOL: The girls' volleyball season has ended and the all of the 7th and 8th grade teams showed much improvement from previous years. Even though they did not win very many matches, the level of skill has greatly increased. We applaud their time and effort on the court! The varsity football season just concluded last Thursday with an exciting win over Coupeville, 26-20. That win enabled the Sultan Middle School Skyhawks the outright league championship with a 5-1 record. This is the second year in a row that Sultan Middle School has been the league champion. Great job! The institution of the new Student Patrol has greatly increased the safety of Sultan Middle School students as they cross the busy intersection at 4th and High Street. It is also very popular with our student population, as five more students have just been trained to be Student Patrol members. We would like to give a special thanks to Ms. Robin Briganti, Sergeant Jeff Shelton, Mr. Scott Sifferman and all of the parents who made this possible! On Tuesday, October 28th, all eight members of the ASB Council will be attending an all day leadership conference at NWESD 189 in Anacortes. While at the conference Sultan Middle School ASB members will be able to interact and share ideas with other ASB members from many other local middle schools. We have attended this conference for the past four years and it has been a wonderful learning experience for our ASB members each time. Sultan Middle School will be holding their first dance of the year on Friday, October 31st. As expected the theme of the dance will be Halloween. Sound Factory will be providing the music and entertainment from 2:30-4:30 P.M. So everybody grab your guys and ghouls and let's party! Minutes of Regular Board Meeting October 27, 2003 Page 3

SULTAN HIGH SCHOOL: Very successful staff development with Marilyn McGuire on September 29th dealing with the issue of student motivation. Parent -Teacher Conferences were well attended. Some teachers were booked solid for both days. Everyone would like to have conferences for second semester to meet new parents. Homecoming week was a HUGE success! Lots of participation by students and staff. The homecoming dance was attended by half of the student body! Thanks to Andrea Fuller and the Leadership Class for planning many fun events. On Friday, October 24, Tabby Bower, a Sultan HS Senior, was a member of an eight-student panel who were asked questions by the State Board of Education dealing with their high school experience. The meeting took place in Edmonds. Fall Sports seasons are winding down. Look for playoff information next week for soccer. Winter Sports begin on November 18. Marching Band has participated at competitions in Wenatchee, Spokane, and Everett. We have brought home many awards from these competitions!
