MARQUETTE NROTC CO’s Message

Aspiring Navy and Marine Corps Officers,

A Chinese proverb attributed to the philosopher Laozi, says “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your journey towards earning a commission in the United States Navy and Marine Corps is about to begin and I commend you for demonstrating the courage to take these first steps!

The Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps is a four-year training program intended to develop you in mind, body, and character such that you can be entrusted with Americas treasure – the young men and women who comprise the all-volunteer military in service to our great nation. The program is demanding and intended to impose a level of stress that regular college students are not under. Your academic load will be greater, expectations of personal wellness and physical fitness are higher, and your quality of character will be assessed challenged, and influenced regularly.

This is not to imply that the program is designed for attrition. On the contrary, the support and mentoring you will receive from upper-class Midshipmen, civilian staff, and active duty staff is an integral part of the program that enable you to succeed. Though it is possible to complete the program alone, the four-year NROTC program is designed to develop self-awareness and a recognition when to reach out for help, teamwork, and some sacrifice when it may be your turn to reach out and help a fellow Midshipman in need.

Recognize that as a NROTC Midshipmen, you are not a typical college student. More is expected of you now because more will be expected of you upon graduation and commissioning! The nature of your personal character will be imbued with this highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty. Unlike other students on campus, you are held to a higher standard.

More than 50 years ago, President Kennedy spoke to the incoming class at the United States Naval Academy, and I offer that his remarks resonate as strongly now as they did then:

I want to express our strong hope that all of you…will stay with the Navy. I can think of no more rewarding a career. You will have a chance in the next 10, 20, and 30 years to serve the cause of freedom and your country all over the globe, to hold positions of the highest responsibility, to recognize that upon your good judgment in many cases may well rest not only the well-being of the men with whom you serve, but also in a very real sense the security of your country.

I can imagine a no more rewarding career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worth while, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: "I served in the United States Navy." So I congratulate you all. This is a hard job, particularly now as you make the change, but I think it develops in you those qualities which we like to see in our country, which we take pride in. I am sure you are going to stay with it. I am sure you are going to be able, by what you are now going through, to find the means to command others.

2 BNCO’s Message

Incoming Class of 2022, Congratulations on your decision to become a part of the Marquette Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) Battalion. You are joining the ranks of hundreds of brilliant men and women who started their Navy and Marine Corps lives at Marquette since the unit’s induction in 1940. Marquette University offers a unique history with the NROTC program. Marquette NROTC was the twelfth unit to be instated and is today the only Jesuit University to directly host an NROTC program. From August 19th to August 25th, you will begin your training with New Student Orientation (NSO). NSO is meant to instill the beginnings of professional military development required of all Navy and Marine Corps Officers. You will PT, perform close order drill, complete team building exercises, and learn what it takes to be a full time midshipman and student. NSO will give you a strong base of knowledge from which you will continue learning throughout the fall semester and the remaining time up to your graduation and commission. This is just the first step of many you will take here on your four year journey. Get ready. NROTC is an adventure in every sense – it will present you with new and exciting (and possibly uncomfortable) situations, it will take you to far off places, it will give you the opportunity to do things you have never done before, and along the way you will meet many amazing people. So take advantage of this summer to prepare for the journey ahead of you. Run that extra mile. Crank out one more push up. Spend a little more time with your family and friends. Going away to college will be just as much of a change for them as it will be for you. I have enjoyed my time in NROTC and hope that you will as well. The time will go by fast. Realize that opportunities will not just be given to you. You will have to seek them out. Your experiences in life will only be what you make them to be. Get excited and enjoy the remainder of your summer. I look forward to meeting you this fall!

Very Respectfully,

MIDN 1/C Kinnunen MU NROTC, Battalion Commander Marquette University, 2018 College of Engineering
