ENVST Internship Application

ENVST Internship Application Please note that successfully approved internships demonstrate environmentally focused projects which apply theoretical and empirically based ideas from courses to a concrete, real-world setting. Internships must be professional in nature and must focus on a clearly-defined environmental project. Internships should involve a student-initiated and student-designed project which has an environmental focus and demonstrates the application of classroom knowledge. Students may not count photocopying, filing, or manual labor as an internship.

Résumé Attach a current copy of your résumé for review by your proposed internship agency and the Environmental Studies Program. Internship applications submitted without a résumé will not be considered for approval.

Internship Description Attach a 2-3 page description of your proposed internship. The Internship description should be developed with the assistance of your Mentor. Please describe, in detail, the environmental internship project you will be responsible for developing and implementing. This is your opportunity to describe your learning objectives and goals. Please pay attention to grammar and spelling. ALL of the following topics must be addressed in your Internship Description. Approval will NOT be given to internship descriptions that fail to address ALL of the topics. o Internship Title. Provide a clearly-defined internship title. Just as a professional position requires a job title, the same thing is required for an internship. o Project Title and Description. Provide a clearly-defined internship project title and project description. All internships require a professional project the student intern will be directly responsible for developing and implementing. List specific goals and responsibilities you and your internship mentor have established to bring this project to fruition. o Contribution to Career Goals. Describe your future career goals and how this internship will directly contribute to those future goals. o Relevance of Past Coursework. Describe how the internship will utilize past coursework and specific concepts from those courses. List course numbers, course titles, and the specific concepts from each course that will be applied to your internship. o Professional Development. Describe the specific skills you expect to learn. These are skills you do not currently possess, but would like to develop and add to your résumé by the end of the internship. o Internship Mentorship. Describe how the agency mentor will be available to provide the student intern with feedback, assisting the student with any trouble-shooting, and serving as a professional connection in the larger environmental field. This may involve, but is not limited to, regular meetings between the student intern and agency mentor, outlining the best means of communication between the student intern and agency mentor, as well as involvement in environmental events where the intern can establish professional connections. o Work Schedule. Provide the specific times and days of the week will you spend at your internship agency.

All internships should be professionally-based and focus on a clearly defined project. We do not grant academic credit for internships that focus primarily on basic tasks like database entry, digging holes, monitoring recycling/trash bins, building trails, harvesting produce etc. Internship projects may require some of these activities, but that should only be a small percentage of the time devoted to the internship project (no more than 35 of the 135 hours).

Mentor Approval Once you have completed this application, you will need to review your internship description with your supervisor and they need to send a direct e-mail to Jennifer Watt ([email protected]) approving of the description and hours.
