DIVINE LITURGY PROPERS:

Tropar of the Resurrection, Tone 4 When the women disciples of the Lord learned from the angel the joyous message of Your Resurrection, they cast away the ancestral curse and with gladness told the apostles: death is overthrown. Christ God is risen, granting the world great mercy.

Tropar to Great Martyr Euphemia, Tone 3 You brought joy to the Orthodox and shame to the defenders of heresy, for you confirmed what the Fathers of the Fourth Council had correctly taught. Glorious Martyr Euphemia, fair virgin of Christ, entreat Christ God to grant us His great mercy.

Tropar to Princess Olga of Kyivan Rus, Tone 1 Having fixed your mind with the wings of divine understanding, you flew to the One Who surpasses visible creation. Having found God, the Creator of All, you received rebirth through Baptism. Ever glorious Olga, you satisfied your- self with the Tree of Life and abide forever incorrupt.

Glory…Kondak of the Resurrection, Tone 4 My Savior and Redeemer as God arose from the tomb and delivered the earthborn from bondage. He has shattered the gates of Hell, and as Master, He has risen on the third day.

Now and ever…Kondak to St. Olga, Tone 4 Today, let us chant the praises of God, the Benefactor of All, Who has been glorified in Ukraine by Divinely Wise Olga. May He grant us the forgiveness of sins through her prayers.

The Holy Church commemorates St. Olga (Ol’ha) today. She was the wife of Great Prince Ihor of Kyiv. After her husband’s death in 945, she was the regent for their young son, Svyatoslav She took terrible revenge upon the pagan Drevlyani Tribe who murdered Prince Ihor. She did much to enhance the economic and social life of her realm and im- prove the life of her people. In 954 she set sail with a fleet to Constantinople. There she was baptized into Orthodoxy by PatriarchTheophylactus with Emperor Constantine Porp- hyrogenitos as her godfather and given the name Helen. She devoted herself to Christian evangelism among the pagans and to Church construction which included St. Nicholas and Holy Wisdom in Kyiv, Annunciation at Vytebsk and Life- Creating Trinity at Pskov. Svyatoslav spurned her urging to become Christian and paganism made a temporary comeback. St. Olga died in 969 and was buried as a Christian by her Priest Gregory. Her incorrupt relics were trans- ferred to the Church of the Tithes in 1007. It was nearly 20 years after her death that her grandson, Prince Volodymyr was baptized and had his nation baptized into Holy Orthodoxy in the Dnipro River on August 14th, 988.
