Sample letter to garage disputing the bill for a repair

Your Name Address Date Trader’s Name Address Dear Sir/Madam (or name of person);

Re: ( Registration number of vehicle, make and model) On the (date) I asked your garage to repair the above vehicle. (describe what work was agreed to be carried out). I was told that this would cost £.... but on collecting the vehicle, I was charged £..... I paid this bill under protest as you refused to allow me to take my car away with out paying the bill. I believe it was an express term of our contract that you would charge me £...... I therefore requested that you refund me the difference between what I was originally quoted and the price I was forced to pay being £...... Or I was not quoted a price (or I was given an estimate of £…) but was told when I went to collect my car that the bill for the repaired would be £….. I paid this bill under protest as you refused to allow me to take my car away with out paying the bill. I believe that as we did not agree a fixed price for this work (or the estimate should have only increased by a reasonable amount), I am legally obliged only to pay a reasonable price for the work. To ascertain a reasonable price, I asked two other garages, (names), to give quotes for the cost of the work. They quoted £.... and £.... respectively less than your final bill. I therefore believe your final bill was unreasonable.

I therefore request you forward me a sum of £.... which I believe I have been over charged. Or I enclose a cheque for the sum of £...., (in full and final settlement based on the price I was originally quoted or based on the subsequent quotations obtained elsewhere as to what I believe to be a reasonable price for the work you carried out.). Yours sincerely/faithfully;
