YUROK TRIBE – JOB DESCRIPTION Police Officer Job Title: Police Officer/Methamphetamine Prevention Department: Public Safety Location: Weitchpec, Yurok Reservation Reports To: Chief of Police FLSA Status: Non-Exempt ALL HIRING IS SUBJECT TO THE YUROK TRIBE’S HIRING PREFERENCE Salary Range: $17.81 – $22.57

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Sergeant, this position will perform a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and tribal ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, and dissemination of information and assistance to the public; controls traffic flow and enforces traffic regulations and performs related work as required. Also works with both Humboldt and Del Norte County drug task-forces and coordinates the development of a community policing methamphetamine program involving education, prevention, and drug suppression on the Yurok Reservation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws and promoting good community relations. 2. Enforce Tribal ordinances, issue verbal warnings and citations; pursue and apprehend suspects and request assistance as required. 3. Interview suspected violators of the law by giving careful and timely consideration to the individual’s constitutional rights resulting in lawfully obtained incriminating statements. 4. Attempt to locate witnesses of reported crimes and interviews them for pertinent information. 5. Follow up on cases resulting in offender apprehension and property recovery 6. Coordinate crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, photographing, overseeing collection and preservation of physical evidence. Maintains the chain of evidence by properly marking, tagging, and storing in accordance with established rules of evidence and departmental procedures. 7. Prepare and document cases, completes reports and records, and prepares and maintains other logs and records. 8. Transport criminals to the courts, hospitals and various other locations. Transports other involved parties as assigned. 9. Research, locate and serve civil papers to local residents as assigned. 10. Investigate traffic accidents and provide traffic and crowd control as necessary. Direct traffic flow and reroute traffic in case of emergencies. 11. Participate in special details and assignments including K-9, search and rescue and resource protection and enforcement duty.

Provide information, directions and other emergency services and assistance to the public. 14. Appear in court and testify as required. 15. Maintain assigned equipment and vehicle in clean, serviceable condition 16. Maintain the confidentiality of investigations and cases and protects the privacy and constitutional rights of individuals. 17. Responsible for implementing the COPS-METH Project and all aspects of program goals and objectives. 18. Conduct specific investigations of suspect methamphetamine traffickers and users. 19. Research and prepare educational anti-meth presentations for the public, local area schools, community members and community activities. 20. Work with police chief to develop and strengthen partnerships between local businesses, schools, community members, council representatives, health providers, law enforcement and state and federal agencies to promote the elimination of meth abuse on the Yurok Reservation. 21. Host monthly community and agency meetings to promote Meth awareness, prevention, and other community policing strategies, and attend trainings as needed. 22. Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Must possess a California POST Certificate from a police academy or equivalent. Possession of a high school diploma or GED is required.

Must have a valid state issued driver’s license (CA or OR) and be insurable under the Tribe’s insurance policy. . Within 90 days of employment, must obtain valid First Aid and CPR certificates. . Must have a valid telephone service. . Must be able to lift or carry unconscious, injured or combative people and other physical fitness requirements necessary to perform the responsibilities of the job. . THIS POSITION REQUIRES COMPLIANCE WITH PUBLIC LAW 101-630.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear.

VISION REQUIREMENTS:

 Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).  Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).  Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships).  Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
