Science SOL 2.4 – Life Processes Notes

Terms to Know  Animal – something that is alive that comes from another animal by birth or eggs.  Life cycle – the process of life from birth to death and all the changes it goes through  Metamorphosis – a dramatic change a frog or butterfly goes through to change completely from one animal to a different animal.  Resemble - look like  Baby – young animal  Adult – fully grown animal  Plant – something that is alive, usually green, grows in one place and starts out as a seed.  Fruit – the part of the plant that protects the seeds and can be eaten.  Root – part of the plant that grows under the ground, sucks up water and nutrients and supports the plant  Stem – straw like middle of the plant that supports the plant and helps it make food  Leaves – green part of the plant that brings in sunlight and air to help make food  Flower – attracts insects to make seeds

 Throughout their lives, plants and animals undergo a series of orderly and identifiable changes.  Changes in living things over time occur in cycles and differ among the various plants and animals.  Some animals, such as frogs and butterflies, go through distinct stages as they mature to adults. Other animals, such as deer, resemble their parents from birth to maturity and do not have distinct stages.  An important part of the life cycle of a flowering plant is the formation of the flower to the development of the fruit.
