Description of Event:  Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda , Halloween/Samhain display, history and literature

Art glass collection of Betty Heil (1927-1911) given to Cabrillo College by the Heil Family Betty was well known in the Santa Cruz arts community both as an artist and a patron. While she painted, sculpted, and worked with glass, her real enjoyment was talking with other artists, sharing in their work, and supporting local galleries. Her home was a rotating exhibit of the best of local arts. We thank the Heil Family and Tobin Keller for the opportunity to exhibit pieces of her collection.

Description of Event: *Poems of the Month for November* will feature Autumn, Immigration, and Turkey poems on the big board located in the LRC lobby; and on the small board located in the LRC lobby will be the poems of Kay Ryan, US Poet Laureate 2008-2010, who will be reading in Santa Cruz on November 20, 3-5pm, at the UCSC Music Recital Hall (she writes small poems).

*Poems of the Month* is a gallery style posting of poetry and art, located in the LRC lobby, on the second floor of the library.

Description of Event: An evocative dance theatre work exploring moving between two worlds by choreographer Sharon Took-Zozaya Featuring Special Guests: Mary McLaughlin and chorus

Inspired by Scottish and Irish tales of shape-shifting seals, SELKIE TIDES features live music with narration and traditional vocals by acclaimed Gaelic singer Mary McLaughlin, as well as original music by Mathew Schreiber. Performers include a rich cross section of the community, featuring both professional dancers and community dancers with and without disabilities, singers, musicians and narrators. Several of the performers are Cabrillo alumni and students.

Description of Event:

This event represents the 2nd visit from Invisible Children to Cabrillo College. The first event was so successful that they asked to come back this semester. Together we will watch “TONY” the latest installment in the Invisible Children documentary series. You will have an opportunity to meet and talk with Child Soldiers from Uganda traveling the country to help spread awareness of the longest running conflict in northern Uganda that has displaced 1.8 million families—forcing children to walk throughout the night to avoid being captured and forced to fight in Kony’s rebel war. Invisible Children uses film, creativity and social action to end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony’s rebel war and restore Northern Uganda to peace and prosperity. Description of Event: World renowned environmental activist, leader and pioneer Frances Moore Lappé (Diet for a Small Planet) will be joined by local author John Robbins (Diet for a New America), Transition Santa Cruz founder Michael Levy and ocean scientist, author and advocate Dr. Wallace J. Nichols. The program will feature a discussion based upon Frances' new book EcoMind, as a forum to share the message of personal action and empowerment with our community at a time when we need it most.

The Cabrillo Ceramics Association will be having their annual Winter Ceramics Sale from 9am-3pm on November 16 in the quad in front of administration and on November 17 in the VAPA Arts Complex. A portion of the proceeds will support student scholarships, awards, guest speakers, and student participation in the annual regional ceramics conference at Davis, CCACA - Conference for the Advancement of the Ceramic Arts. Submitted by: Rose Sellery Department Cabrillo Gallery Event Title: WITHOUT ART: Artists Respond to Life Without Art Event Date: November 14 - December 16, 2011 Reception: Thursday, November 17, 5:00 - 7:00 PM Performances: Thursday, November 17, beginning at 5:30 PM Location: Cabrillo Gallery, 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos

Description of Event: The Cabrillo Gallery hosts the exhibition, WITHOUT ART: Artists Respond to Life Without Art, with an opening reception on Thursday, November 17th from 5:00-7:00 PM. The reception will include dance and vocal performances starting at 5:30 PM. The exhibit continues through Friday, December 16.

Cabrillo Gallery director, Tobin W. Keller, asked artists from the Visual and Performing Arts division of Cabrillo College to respond with commentaries on what life would be like without art of any kind. The multimedia exhibition includes two- and three-dimensional works, dance performances, short theater and vocal performances which will take place throughout the month long exhibition. The Gallery will present the event “A Day Without Art” on Thursday, December 1, an international observance of the AIDS epidemic and the toll it has taken on the arts community. The Cabrillo Gallery has also partnered with SCAARF, Santa Cruz Artists’ Assistance Relief Fund, and all donations made during the exhibition will go directly to this beneficent organization that assists artist with medical emergencies.

Other events include vocal performance by Cheryl Anderson and the Cabrillo Chorale, dance performances by instructors Cid Pearlman, Rachel Van Dessel, Sharon Took-Zozaya and Helen Jackson- Jones and her students of the Cabrillo dance department. A theatrical piece by drama instructor Sarah Albertson and her students round out the performances during the exhibition. Exhibiting artists include: Jody Alexander in collaboration with Janet Fine, Sandra Frank, Gordon Hammer, Andree LeBourveau, Brian Legakis, Lesley Louden, Victoria May, Ron Milhoan, Sean M. Monaghan, Leslie Murray, Dawn Nakanishi, Wendy Norris, Beth Regardz, Sylvia Rios, Gail Ritchie, Rose Sellery, Claire Thorson, and Francine Van Meter.
