MATH 085 – Elements of Algebra WINTER 2009 5 Credits

Course This course introduces algebraic thinking and manipulation. Real number properties are Description: reviewed. Students will solve linear equations and application problems involving geometric formulas, motion, and money; graph linear equations; simplify, factor, and expand polynomials; add and subtract rational expressions; and work with exponents and scientific notation. Learners will develop study skills and habits, team skills, and the ability to express math in many forms while working with both abstract and real world applications. NOTE: Credits for this course are not transferable, nor do they apply to any college degree or certificate.

Required Angel, Allen R. Elementary and Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Materials: Third Edition. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson Education, Inc., 2008.

Scientific Calculator – cell phone calculators will not be allowed! (Optional: Graphing Calculator – recommendation is a TI-84)

Class Meetings: Tuesday and Thursday 8:45am-10:50am CC1 250

Prior Learning: Completion of MATH 075 with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement by testing in MATH 085.

Completion of ENG 080 with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement by testing in ENG 090.

Course  Perform algebraic manipulations at a level that allows success in higher- Outcomes: level math classes.  Demonstrate ability to work with abstract symbols and reasoning.  Compare, convert and create in words, graphs and formulas.  Engage in work, study, and conversation on the topics of algebra with colleagues.

Expectations: Mathematics is a study of patterns and solving techniques. I will demonstrate several tools and methods for problem solving in class through the use of examples, discussion, and questions. You will practice using these techniques and possibly a few other techniques found in the textbook during group activities and homework. Since we learn better by actively working through problems, expect to spend 2-3 hours outside of class for each credit-hour spent in class. Assessments:

Point totals are subject to change at the instructor’s discretion.

Homework: Homework sets are posted on the class website. You will turn in your homework per the attached schedule at the beginning of the class period when due. Each homework set is worth 20 points.

Late homework assignments (considered to be any homework received after the beginning of the class period due) will not be accepted.

All problems should be in final draft form, completed neatly in pencil. Do NOT turn in homework on paper torn out of a spiral notebook. Failure to follow these directions will result in no credit for that homework assignment.

In-Class Team There will be in-class discussions and group work. Examples include working problems, Projects: presenting problems, and group worksheets. These points cannot be made up for any reason. Daily attendance is recommended.

Quizzes: There will be eight quizzes at 10 points each. NO make-up quizzes will be given. You will drop your lowest quiz score. This gives a total of 70 points.

Exams: There will be three exams. NO make-up exams will be given. You will drop your lowest exam score. This gives a total of 200 points for exams.

Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam. It is your responsibility to contact me within 24 hours of the exam if you cannot make the final. Failure to do so will result in a zero for the final exam. The final exam is worth 150 points.

Videos/CDs: There are lecture videos and CDs on reserve in the Media Center. The Media Center may be found on the second floor of the Library. These videos and CDs show a person working through and discussing the examples found in the textbook.

Academic See the current catalog for the school’s policy on Academic Honesty. There is zero Honesty: tolerance for violations. Violations include, but are not limited to, copying homework, quiz and/or exam problems and placing your name on a group project when you did not actively participate. If there has been a violation, penalties can range from 0 on the assignment(s) to an automatic 0.0 in the class.
