POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION: ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST

LOCATION: Biological Services Department Bay Mills Indian Community Brimley, Michigan

WAGE: $33,111 to $40,320/year to start depending on education and experience - the specialist will be eligible for a raise after the first year of employment

STATUS: Non-Exempt

TERM: Permanent Full Time

POSITION SUMMARY: The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for the nonpoint source pollution grant and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative tribal capacity grant. The nonpoint source pollution grant covers travel and training for nonpoint source meetings and conferences and involvement with the community and partners on education and prevention and restoration of nonpoint sources of pollution to surface waters. In addition, the Environmental Specialist will assist in collection and analysis of surface water quality data on small streams, inland lakes, wetlands, and Lake Superior. The Environmental Specialist will also be responsible for some biological sample processing, summer beach sampling, temperature loggers/buoys data collection, data entry and analysis, and report writing. This position will be responsible for some supervision of summer technicians and interns. Under the tribal capacity grant the Environmental Specialist will be responsible for participating in the process of and projects related to the Lake Superior Lakewide Management Plan (LaMP) and the St Mary's River Area of Concern (AOC) such as Superior Work Group and the St. Mary's River Binational Public Advisory Council. The tribal capacity grant covers travel and training related to LaMP and AOC efforts and provides support for other Bay Mills Biological Services programs. The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for organizing current pollution prevention activities and developing other activities that are pursuant to AOC and LaMP goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Grant/budget oversight and management 2. Some oversight of technicians and interns 3. Keeping updated on Great Lakes environmental issues 4. Work on the St. Mary's Area of Concern and be involved in St. Mary's River BPAC 5. Work on Lake Superior Lakewide Management Plan goals 6. Development of new activities and management of ongoing activities pursuant to AOC and LaMP goals 7. Writing grants to further LaMP and AOC efforts in the community 8. Identify and inspect areas of nonpoint sources of pollution 9. Development of Stormwater/Snow management and erosion control plans 10. Helping the community with existing best management practices 11. Help the community select and implement best management practices for nonpoint source pollution prevention or remediation 12. Grant writing for projects to remedy pollution sources 13. Producing educational materials for the community 14. Attend meetings as a representative of Bay Mills Indian Community 15. Data collection, organization, management, manipulation, and display 16. Report writing 17. Reporting to supervisors 18. Must attend all mandatory trainings designated by the Human Resources Department and/or Department Directing 19. Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of this position’s essential functions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position may require working during adverse weather conditions. Fieldwork and/or office duties may require the employee to begin early in the morning, work late into the evenings, and travel long distances. Heavy lifting (> 100 pounds) will be required and the employee should be in good physical condition.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 1. Successful completion of at least a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science or other related field 2. Understanding of basic biological and environmental science principles 3. Experience developing and presenting educational materials and workshops for different age groups 4. Knowledge of sampling for and measurement of aquatic biological, chemical, and physical parameters 5. Understanding of/ability to interpret water quality data (biological, chemical, physical) 6. Basic knowledge of aquatic macroinvertebrate identification desirable 7. Understanding of nonpoint source pollution issues and best management practices 8. Knowledge of Great Lakes environmental issues 9. Knowledge and experience in grant writing and management 10. Knowledge and experience in budget management and development 11. Knowledge of experimental design and statistics 12. Experience using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) 13. Knowledge of GPS equipment and GIS software – ArcMap 14. Experience planning and organizing volunteer or community events 15. Ability to manage a diverse array of responsibilities/activities 16. Ability to work with partners and other agencies 17. Good technical writing, oral communication and presentation skills 18. Strong organization skills 19. Must be available for overnight travel and occasional weekend work 20. Must be able to travel to Canada for meetings/conferences 21. Must have an excellent past work record as demonstrated from reports from past employment references 22. Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record 23.
