NEA ORGANIZING INSTITUTE – Inventory (not for duplication) Orlando, Florida – November 29 to December 3, 2004 Session: ORGANIZING PRINCIPLED POWER IS POWER A DIRTY WORD? IS POWER A NECESSARY EVIL? DOES WINNING POWER MEAN SOMEBODY HAS TO LOSE IT? Juan Parrino, Organizer with United Teachers Los Angeles, explores definitions and roles of power. Coming from 30-plus years of diverse organizing experiences, Juan’s conviction is that consistently implemented relational organizing for principled power is essential to addressing the complex and evolving concerns within Public Education. In a 3-hour session that emphasizes exchange and utilizes small group conversations -- a key organizing method -- participants reflect on their own feelings about and notions of power. Issues of trust and power-sharing, organizational cultures, and building “social capital” to leverage power are delved into. The session culminates with outlining steps to break out of institutional paradigms that prevent principled power.
