STATEMENT OF DUTIES –RANGER COORDINATOR

The Ewamian Rangers are employed by the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation and funded by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection through the Qld Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program. Ewamian country extends east from where the Gulf Development Road meets the Kennedy Highway, west to the Gilbert River, north to the intersection of the Einasleigh and Gilbert Rivers and south to Gilberton and Oak Park.

Ewamian Rangers work focuses on activities on Tallaroo Station and important sites on Ewamian Traditional lands.

BACKGROUND

The Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program is managed by the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation. The goal of the Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program is effective and culturally appropriate management of their land by Ewamian people.

Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation is seeking a suitably experienced and skilled person to fill the position of Ranger Coordinator to manage and implement the Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program for the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation. This position is responsible for supervising a team of 3 (including 1 Head Ranger and 2 Rangers) in the management and implementation of the work program.

Salary: L6 - $64,349-$67,780

Hours 76hrs/fortnight (working fortnight of 9 days on, 5 days off)

Employment Full-time until 30/06/2015 (then subject to funding)

Reports to: Coordinator – Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation

Probation: A probationary period of 3 months will apply ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise and assist the Ewamian Rangers to carry out various tasks related to natural resource management projects that help improve and sustain natural resource management in the Ewamian traditional country. Develop projects, implementation plans and budgets. Assist with progress monitoring, reporting and awareness-raising and fundraising activities.

This includes the preparation, implementation and monitoring of plans that relate to issues such as the management of feral animals, weeds, fire and waterways. Working with other staff and traditional owners in the recording of traditional knowledge and culturally important sites , and co-ordinating other activities with other members of staff and traditional owners. .

STATEMENT OF DUTIES 1. Under the direction of the EAC Coordinator contribute to development of annual work plans and budgets for Ewamian Rangers. 2. Prepare weed, pest and fire management plans. 3. Supervise and assist the Ewamian Rangers to carry out various tasks to implement natural resource management projects. This will include:  Ensuring the annual work plan is achieved through day-to-day work planning, scheduling and coordination for effective implementation of ranger activities  Staff supervision and performance management  Ranger training, mentoring, leadership and team development, including identifying training needs and facilitating training opportunities for Rangers  Ensuring the effective maintenance and repair of Ewamian vehicles and assets, including cleaning vehicles and performing regular vehicle checks 2. Provide the EAC Coordinator with accurate and timely progress reports as required for each natural resource management project in your area of responsibility. 3. Develop and maintain relationships and undertake negotiations with land holders and Traditional Owners regarding access to country in the project areas. 4. Engage with Traditional Owners through the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation Board regarding management priorities, cultural priorities and restrictions and provide advice on these issues to Coordinator. 5. Overseeing logistical arrangements and data collection associated with scientific research undertaken in conjunction with other staff members and/or the traditional owners to survey natural habitats and record survey results as baseline data against which to measure effectiveness of protective/rehabilitative measures. 6. Provide information in a culturally appropriate form to traditional owners in relation to natural resource management projects undertaken by the Ewamian Rangers. 7. Contribute to the development and dissemination of education, awareness-raising and publicity materials that support the effective implementation and ongoing funding of Ewamian’s natural resource management projects. 8. Provide general logistical and other support to other Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation staff as directed by the Co-ordinator, including driving vehicles in rough, off-road conditions and in remote parts of the Ewamian traditional country; 9. Undertake other tasks relevant to this position as required from time to time by the EAC Coordinator.

Other Requirements  This position calls for a 9/5 roster where it is based at Talaroo Station (approx.. 300km west of Mareeba). You must be in a position to be able to spend this time away from your family base.  You must provide your own transport to/from Mareeba at the start and end of your shift.  Formal qualifications (Minimum Cert IV in Conservation and Land Management) in Natural Resource Management, Environmental or Agricultural science or a related field would be considered desirable.  Possession of a manual drivers licence. Extensive 4WD driving experience in remote areas would be considered desirable.  You will contribute a nominal amount towards living expenses (food and rent) at Talaroo from your wages.  Work flexible hours inclusive of out of ordinary working hours and weekends.

SELECTION CRITERIA

SC1 Demonstrated knowledge and experience in natural resource management, with a particular focus on managing weeds, feral animals, fire, and other threats to river systems.

SC2 Demonstrated ability to supervise and assist employees to carry out and achieve tasks.

SC3 Demonstrated ability to represent organisations and to engage graziers, traditional owners, government agencies, non-government organisations and other stakeholders to protect and promote the Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program. SC4 Ability to develop, manage, monitor and evaluate projects and conduct project reporting to meet milestones and demonstrate outcomes.

SC6 Ability to work and manage competing priorities effectively both independently and in multi-disciplinary teams.

SC5 Demonstrated computer skills and experience. Knowledge and experience of GPS and GIS mapping systems is desirable.
